Davina Mini Exercise Bike
Advantages: Easy to use, mine was a bargain, widely available.
Disadvantages: Expensive at full price for what it is, low resistance levels, small font on computer, slips a lot.
I have been losing weight over the last year or so and my aim has been to keep it off. So far I have managed very well with the odd few pounds going back on here and there but then coming off again. I am always on the lookout for items that I can use to help me lose weight at home without a gym membership. Last year I purchased a cross trainer when I had a few months off work but that didn't work out for me and I ended up selling it in order to buy some other bits. This mini exercise 'bike' is one such item that I picked up for just £8.00 from a local bargains Facebook page! This price seemed reasonable enough to me and I figured that if I did not get on well with this that I could sell it for a similar price again and it would be snapped up just as quickly as it was by me!
As I did not buy this new I did not know a massive amount about the construction of this, however from looking on the Internet I can see that you do need to partake in some self assembly with the pedals and feet grips and bits like that needing to be added. The only change I have made to this is to superglue the feet/gripper things on to prevent them from moving when I am using this 'bike'.
Basically the concept of this item is that you can sit and watch tv or do some ironing or something while you are burning calories. This is a small pedal machine. You put your feet on to the pedals and you peddle away. The whole time you are able to sit there without moving anything other than your feet. Obviously some effort is needed but the idea is that you could be at your desk at work or sitting at home relaxing in front of the tv and still burn off some calories. I must say that this idea appealed to me greatly and was the only reason for me picking this up, well that and the price!
You can probably see from my comments above that I ended up glueing the feet onto the bottom of this bike. The only reason for doing this was that the bike was slipping while in use and I read online that this was an effective way to fix this problem. I followed this advice and was very pleased with the results. Once I had the slipping under control I was able to start using this 'bike' on a nightly basis.
This bike is incredibly easy to use, all you need to do is pedal and away you go. I was quite pleased with the results that I received while using this bike, that was until I tried to use the built-in computer. I was disappointed to find that the numbers are small to read, you cannot adjust your weight which means that the calorie indicator is not accurate and overall the computer was quite poor. You can adjust the difficulty/resistance of this, however there are only three settings which also is a little disappointing. I used the highest of the three settings and even that is not a challenge at all despite me not being the best person in the world for exercising regularly.
This bike is quite small in size and is light enough for me to move from sofa to sofa in my living room with no problems at all. I can use this whenever I like and if I have guests round and want to move this then I can do this very simply and in a matter of seconds. This takes up considerably less space than my cross trainer did and the price was much better too!
Overall I found this bike a little too easy to pedal for my liking, even on the highest setting. The price that I paid was incredibly reasonably but if I had paid the full price from Argos of £35.00 then I probably would have been quite disappointed and wanted to take this back. As I Bought this so cheaply I have decided to keep this for now. I have been using this while watching television in the evenings, and while I have not lost stones, I have definitely lost a couple of pounds since I began using this. As I am having a stage of eating what I like at the moment I have been quite pleased with this who far and will definitely continue to use this. I am rating this bike 3/5. The full price is expensive and the resistance is low even on the highest setting but because it is lightweight and simple to use (now I have glued the feet on) it has redeemed itself slightly hence the almost middle of the road marks from me.
Summary: A very average mini exercise bike.
