We've been using a number of different types of weights of late, trying to get into shape ready for the Summer, if it ever gets here. Moving away from doing heavier weights and looking more for lighter weights to do controlled exercises, the comfort factor has been more important than the adaptablity with weights, and this hard to find set is actually very good.
My wife has acquired these second hand, and at first glance they're hardly used, which is in keeping with what she was told when she got them. Definitely one for her in terms of colour, they're pink and grey, the colours combining okay I suppose, but I'd naturally prefer blue. I don't know if they come in blue, but pink exercise things usually have a blue counterpart.
The comfort factor is evident here, as the focus is clearly on the foam padding around the weights inside. I can't quite see how it's put together, but there are some sift foam rings wrapped tightly round a central weight. The foam then enlarges towards the edges and forms the ends of the weights, again foam padded but with a bulbous edge. At first this seems like an aesthetic element but it turns out these have a practical usage.
The first time I used these it was doing dumbell rows. This involves holding the weights at a vertical angle, and gravity puts the pressure on them sliding down. The foam grip took hold straight away, and I clearly noticed that even if I relaxed my grip it was as if the weights were holding on to my hands on my own. Not so much that letting go completely would still have the same effect, but even so it was still noticeable. Later on, coming into doing a similar exercise but later on and with heavier arms and a load more sweat dripping from my brow, my hands were obviously sweatier and I feared that the weights would have felt a lot harder to use, slipping from my hands. Curiously, it was as if I'd picked them up for the first time. This time, the foam grips in the middle weren't necessarily the main reason but it was the bulbous ends that did the work. Stopping my hands from going anywhere, it was as if the strong grip element from earlier had transferred and these bulbous ends were holding onto my hands.
It was a weird feeling, and I suppose my only concern was that the sweat would get soaked into the weights' padding and this was a bit off putting. However, the foam padding was dry immediately afterwards and certainly didn't smell as if they had been doused in sweat. My wife used them as much as I did and the same thing happened with her. I guess what I'm saying is that we were both similarly impressed by how easy they were to hold, and in terms of the weight itself, they were ideal for use as light weights but with a good amount of reps, depending on which exercises we were working on. Quite often, even a small increase in weight can have a huge difference depending on which programme you follow.
The weights don't roll around much either, so for storing this is pretty useful. There's a weird plastic bit on the end which is quite smooth. I don't know whether this is for balance or anything, but all I do know is that using them for what we have done is very effective. They balance well, the foamy padding is firm and grippy yet very soft on the hands and doesn't cause any rubbing. They seem pretty hard to get hold of, and while they cost us virtually nothing as second hand, the new price of just over £10 seems fair value to me for what is essentially a very good, if very pink, product. Recommended.
