I recently bought a yoga DVD, and over the past few months, I've been getting to grips with some weird and wonderful poses. However, it soon became clear that I'd need a yoga block to achieve some of the stretches, so I thought I'd have a look on Amazon. I was surprised to see how many there were to choose from, and how much they cost- I'd been expecting to pay maybe a couple of quid for what is essentially just a block of foam, but most of the blocks available were at least £5. In the end I settled on a purple, Gaiam block. At £6.99, with free delivery, it was pretty average in price, but it looked a lot thicker and sturdier than many of the other blocks.
This block is 9" wide, 6" high and 4" deep- in other words, it's pretty chunky. Mid-purple in colour, its only decoration is the Gaiam name and a little flower indented into its surface. I like this simplicity- it makes the block unobtrusive, unlike some of the more garish yoga blocks I saw on Amazon. It is made from dense, smooth foam, that's ever-so-slightly squashy to the touch, which makes it comfortable to lean your head, hands or knees on. But at the same time, it's firm and strong enough to take your weight, and provide full support in a stretch. If needed, the block can be spot cleaned with mild detergent.
I've found this block really helpful in supporting some of the trickier poses, and its cuboid shape means that I can rest it on different sides, depending on the height I need. Even on its smallest side, it feels completely secure, which is essential if you're putting your weight on it. The foam also seems to be very durable- unlike my flimsy mat, this withstands pressure from my hands, and it hasn't been scratched by my fingernails. In fact, it looks in perfect condition, exactly as it did when it first arrived.
Having used this block, and compared its quality with the mat I bought from a different manufacturer, I would say that it was worth the cost, and I'd happily buy from the Gaiam range in the future. This simple block does everything I need it to- it's comfortable to use, but strong and durable, and I can't see myself having to buy another for a very long time.
