I needed a set of hand weights when I started doing the 30 day shred. As it was not something I'd used before, even in my younger days when I went to the gym, I purchased this set as it was from a well known brand that I associated with good quality.
This box of weights contain three sets: 0.5kg, 1kg and 1.5kg. There are two hand weights at each level and each come in a different colour, green, blue and brown respectively. The weights are stored in a light grey moulded plastic case with an integrated handle at the top and a side opening case. The weights themselves, according to the website, are iron covered in vinyl. They are in pastal shades and the vinyl is buff rather than shiny. As well as colour to distinguish the different weights, each has their actual weight written in white at either end.
I found the weights very easy to use. They were comfortable to hold, easy to pick up and put down between uses and still felt secure even when my hands were a bit sweaty. This is down to the design of the weights , hexagon at the ends with a hexagon handle in the middle which stops rolling both on the floor and in your hands. They will move a bit on the floor but my experience is that it's minimal. They feel also comfortable in your hand with a soft plastic texture
The vinyl covering makes the weights easy to clean down with only a wipe required. The storage box is great provided you put them back in. The moulding in the box ensures the weights stay in position even when it's lifted. I personally thought the side closing with top handle was very clever as even if you forget to clip the box closed, the contents won't fall out and hit you on the toe. I wouldn't carry them in the case unclipped though as that would be unsafe. The box when full is not difficult to carry which again makes them easy to use. Storage wise, I push the box under the sofa when not in use.
Even as a beginner I was able to start with the 1kg weights and I'm not sure I will ever use the lighter ones as I felt no added resistance. My daughter loves the 0.5kg when she wants to join in with a session and the lack of roll when dropped on the floor makes that safe to do. I can't see myself ready to move up to the next weight for a while so these will have a significant useful life span for me.
There may be cheaper alternatives available but I feel these are a good quality weight with many safety and practical features. I would certainly recommend them to anyone, especially if you are making a start on the shred.
I've recently been trying to up the amount of exercise I do. It is hard to get myself motivated when I have the same old things to exercise with, there is only so much skipping or fitness DVD's I can handle without getting bored. For that reason, I went on the hunt for some new equipment to vary things. One of the things I purchased was this hand weights set made from Reebok.
The thing that attracted me to this set from Reebok was the fact that it had three different size weights inside so as my fitness improved I could work my way up the different weights to suit my ability. The three different weights are 0.5kg, 1kg and 1.5kg. These weights really are light and for a weakling like me they are perfect, but for anyone with any hint of muscle I think these may be a little too light for them. The 0.5kg feel like you are only lifting air, but after you have used them for a while you can feel your arms aching, well I can any. I would imagine that these are pretty worthless for anyone other than a beginner. I haven't moved on to the heavier weights yet, not until I get used to the 0.5kg.
Each weight is made from iron and coated in vinyl so they feel nice when holding them. There isn't any instability so you do feel safe when holding them and don't feel like you will drop them. The vinyl coating is nice, however once your hands get sweaty when working out it does make them feel a little more slippery than normal.
To look at the weights, they don't look like anything special as the colours aren't very inspiring. With pale blue, green and brown colours they definitely don't ignite the fire in me to pick them up and use them. It is nice that each of the different size weights are a different colour and size so you know what weight you will be lifting.
I've used these weights on their own, but to mix up working out a bit I've also used them when doing my fitness DVD or when I'm doing some step aerobics. It's nice to be able to tone up my arms while doing some exercise I would be doing anyway. It also saves the embarrassment of visiting a gym to do some weights as you can use them in the comfort of your own home.
The three pairs of weights come inside its own plastic storage case. Again, this storage case is nothing special to look at as it is boring grey in colour. However, I love the fact that the weights have storage of their own as it is easy to keep all the weights in the same place but still easy to transport them for one place to another. I keep my weights under my bed but usually work out in the lounge so I can transport all the weights at the same time in the case, then transport them back easy as pie.
The going rate for this Reebok set of hand weights is around the £20 mark, I think this is around the price of similar hand weights. It can be purchased from a variety of places on the web including Amazon.
I would recommend these hand weights based on the fact that it has three different weights and its own storage case. However, if you are looking for bright, inspiring weights, these aren't for you, the colours are dull and boring. They are a great way of toning up in the comfort of your own home.
