      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A simple but effective method of toning those legs.

I have used steps in gyms and at home over the years and after an unfortunate accident with home one whilst moving house (it got squished at the bottom of a pile of furniture in the removal van and cracked in the middle) I had been planning on replacing it for some time. This became more of a priority when I started having physiotherapy on my knee earlier this year and was given a lot of exercises which required step type movements.

Living in a flat I do not own any stairs and unless I wanted to use the communal hallway stairs (um...not really) having a step is the only way to do this safely. This Reebok step can be picked up for around the £45 mark online but I actually bought mine for £5 at a car boot sale - and I would always recommend looking out for this kind of equipment at such sales because you would be surprised what people want to get rid of and what price they will accept!

Anyway, this is literally an oblong step made of a very hard plastic resin, it has grippers on the bottom to prevent it slipping and sliding around on hard surfaces (although I use mine on carpet where it is not an issue). The step is pink on top - just like in the photo- and has the Reebok sign in the middle, I notice online that you can also get this step in blue if that has more appeal.

The height of the step is adjustable and the feet can be removed and re-built to three different heights (15cm, 20cm and 26cm) which is very useful. For most of my physio exercises I use the highest step level but for other workouts the lower ones are great.

This is a fairly basic bit of kit but you would be surprised the amount you can tone up your legs and thighs with such a simple thing, I use mine a lot and would not be without it - keep your eyes peeled at car boot sales if you fancy picking up a bargain like I did!

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A good piece of equipment to start your fitness routine from the comfort of your own home!

This stepper is great, it is very solidly build, and it is adjustable to 6, 8 or 10 inches off the ground- so great for people of all heights and fitness levels! While using this stepper it remained solid and does not move while I am struggling to get up and down. It is also non slip- which is great- the last thing you want is to be slipping during your exercise routine!
The set up instructions only contained pictures and no words, so you have to figure out a lot of things for yourself- which is the biggest disadvantage.

I use this stepper five times a week. It has made such a difference- I feel fitter and stronger and have lost a few ponds. I tend to use it while I watch TV which makes the time go in faster and I don't get as tired as I do when just using it with music.
I would recommend this stepper to people who want to improve their fitness in the comfort of their own home- not all of us want to or feel comfortable going to the gym so this is a great alternative! Though I have to say that you need the determination not to give up after a week as many people do with home equipment.
A down side to this stepper is that it is bulky to have lying about the house- so make sure you have somewhere to store it as its not something you want lying in the middle of your sitting room!
There is also a great choice step dvd's out there in the shops- there's one to suit everyone so don't be put off by the first one you try- they are not all the same!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Great for a fun and energetic workout!

I have started doing a number of fitness classes at my local gym and during these classes we use a variety of different pieces of gym equipment and one of them is the Reebok Step. I really enjoy doing step workouts and have fond memories of doing classes in high school, I would recommend trying classes or home purchase to people.

This piece of gym equipment is made by the sports company Reebok who make a wide variety of sports clothing, footwear and accessories. They make a number of different step boxes and this is one of their more original and basic models. The step itself has dimensions of 90cm length and 35cm width so is quite a bulky thing to have lying about in your house. The height is adjustable to 15cm, 20cm and maximum height of 25cm for different exercises and difficulties.

The step itself is made of a really tough, durable grey and black plastic material overall, with a rubber and textured surface. This top surface is a bright blue colour with huge, white Reebok logo written across it. The weight of the step is 20kgs and the recommended maximum user weight is 18 stone, though it feels very sturdy and hard wearing.

The height of the step is easily adjusted by altering the position of the removable base pieces, much like a puzzle and slotting them into place which alters the height of the step. This changes the intensity of your workout and can also be beneficial for people of different heights when using it for resistance, balance and core workouts. These base pieces are non slip so when you are doing fast anaerobic workouts and jumping about on the step you don't have to worry about falling over and embarrassing yourself! The rubber top is cushioned as well a having a good grip surface to enhance your workout.

Step exercising was created by a lady called Gin Miller who deigned and instructed anaerobic exercise classes using the step block. Since then the sport has evolved and there are multiple types of workouts designed using this piece of kit including: The basic step, sculpting workouts, power and interval step, circuit step and dance inspired step.

During my gym classes which usually last half an hour we use the step every ten minutes incorporating moves like small leaps from one foot to the other over the platform, squats and hops, which are quite high impact and intensity but a great way of burning fat! You can also use them for certain types of yoga and Pilates training.

There are loads of good DVDs available for home workouts using steps and I fully intend to put one of these (or perhaps something a bit cheaper) on my Christmas list. Most gyms have either step classes or workouts that use these steps, they are great fun and a very good exercise technique for all ages and abilities. These cost about £50 online are always available on ebay and secondhand websites. A highly recommended piece of kit!
