I decided to get myself a yoga mat after I started carrying out yoga quite regularly at home a few years ago for relaxation. After originally getting an inexpensive Everlast yoga mat and being let down by the quality I thought I'd replace it with a more premium brand. After a bit of searching I found myself looking at Ruth White yoga mats. The Ruth White brand have been making Oeko-Tex mats for both adults and children in the UK since 1981 and are now chosen by many yoga clubs and schools.
Ruth White sell a variety of different ranges of yoga mats including Ampio, Premier, Travel. This mat however is part of the classic range. The classic yoga mats are available in 3 different colours; purple, dark blue or light blue. Most impressive though is the range of sizes which are offered from the cheapest option 180cm at £21.95, through 200cm, 220cm and 240cm up to the largest size of 260cm for £39.50. As I am quite short at 5"3 I settled on the 200cm option for £27.50 which measures 200(L)cm x 60(W)cm x 4.5(D)mm in a pretty purple colour. It is worth noting that you have to wait a bit longer for the extra long sizes to be delivered as they have to be specially cut.
I was really impressed by the size of my mat. I can fit on it easily with plenty of room to spare and I never feel myself going off the edge or having to reposition away from it. The mats roll up really well and although they are not as lightweight as some cheaper alternatives they are still easily portable and can be transported around the house by carrying.
The PVC surface material of the mat is brilliant - not only is it thick and spongy which makes it really comfortable to use even on hard flooring, it also has excellent grip. The mat is non-slip and I've tried out loads of various poses on it now such as Warrior and have never felt myself slipping around even when using bare feet. Another positive point about the material is that it is Latex free, tested for harmful substances and is produced in an environmentally friendly way which is always good.
An interesting feature of this mat which I have yet to try is that it can be used with a Nintendo Wii Fitness Balance Board. I've noticed my balance board has a habit of leaving marks in the carpet after using so I'll have to try this and see if the mat can stop it from doing this.
The mat is really easy to keep clean by wiping down it with a damp cloth every now and then and I've found this is sufficient to get off any marks and keep the mat looking nice. However if you need to the mats can also be cleaned in the washing machine at low temperatures - about 40°C. The only problem with this is that the mats take a while to dry, particularly as they cannot be put in the tumble dryer.
Overall I absolutely love my Ruth White yoga mat. It not only looks pretty and high-quality but the fact that it is well-made and designed makes it really comfortable to use even on hard flooring and I feel safe knowing that I'm not going to slip. It has lasted me over a year now with no obvious signs of wear and has proven to be really durable. I will definitely be recommending this mat to anyone who does yoga - whether as a hobby like me or as an expert.
