      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A good budget Step that has lasted me for years.

      INTRODUCTION

I bought my Tesco Step about six years ago when I decided to up the intensity of my aerobics workouts.

I remember when Step was The Big Fitness Craze Of The Moment (TM) but sadly, that time has long passed. I'd always enjoyed Step though and resolved to buy one. Since they were out of fashion it was tricky to find one at a decent price, but I tracked this one down on the Tesco website for about £15. A quick check on the website tells me they are now £20 and black/grey toned rather than the blue/grey one seen above, but the specifications are identical in both models. My Step is blue/grey and identical to the one seen above.

      PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Step is made of a very sturdy plastic, and is formed from five components: the main unit plus four 'legs'. The Step can be built to two heights: the lowest height, with the blue pair of legs is around 10cm, the medium height with the grey legs sandwiched between the blue parts (as seen in the image) is around 15cm.

The basic dimensions of the unit are 15cm x 68cm x 28cm (or 10cm x 68cm x 28cm at the lower setting), and the website states the unit can take a user up to 100kg in weight (220lb, 15.5St) so it is suitable for almost everyone.

      USER EXPERIENCE

Sadly I am not currently able to use the Step at the moment due to my chronic joint problems but when I was able to use it, I was using it for an hour at least once a week as part of an intensive aerobics regime.

Assembling the Step is easy, with the leg blocks easy to move in and out of position to adjust the height. I've used the Step on both carpet and laminate flooring: on carpet it's good and stable but on laminate flooring I found it has a tendency to slide dangerously in the middle of a movement, but the issue was easily fixed by placing a small rug under the unit.

I've used the Step with a variety of routines: basic Stepping; 'over the top' moves where you step on and over the Step both over the width and length; moves that take you along the Step and back down on the front; and also for extensive floor work routines where I lie down on the Step or lean back with my arms on the Step for modified push-ups. It's never broken or dented and has held my (fairly heavy) weight in all postures with ease.

The unit is light and easy to carry around: I'd estimate it weighs around 5kg. Assembling it to different heights is easy and I've always found the legs lock solidly in place at the first try so there's been no danger of a leg slipping off in the middle of a workout. It's also easy to clean: a quick wipe over with an antibacterial wipe does the job.

My only complaint about the unit is that it is a little shorter than some other Steps, making some moves, such as those where I step onto the side of the Step, and 'windmill' across it and off, hard as it's easy to fall off the end! I've had to modify a few movements in my routines because of this.

      CONCLUSION

In conclusion this is a great basic Step that is suitable for almost everyone and most routines. It's a good price, stable, light and easy to assemble to different heights. I haven't been able to use it for the last year but it got good, regular use for the five years before that and I hope to be able to resume some light Step aerobics again soon. It's sitting under the stairs waiting patiently for me in the mean time :-)

(I've also found it to be very useful when painting and decorating as it's just the right height for me to stand on and reach the ceilings in our house!)

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A nice way to excercise in your own home

I really enjoy going up the gym and like to try and get up there at least a couple of times a week, I also have a few pieces of work out equipment at home, one I normally use on a regular basis is my weighted hula hoop (previously reviewed) however since being pregnant I have had to give this up for a few months, this was something I used to do most mornings and after I had to give it up I did miss doing it so I decided to have a look around for an alternative that I could do instead of hula hooping. Whilst looking on the Tesco Direct website I came across the Value Aerobic Step, this looked perfect for what I wanted, it was reasonably priced and would allow me to do a more gentle work out in the mornings.

The Value Aerobic Step looks similar to the steps that you see up the gym, mine is black and grey although the description on the website does say colours may vary. My step has light grey plastic feet with the main part of the step being made from a black plastic. Right in the middle on the top of the step (where you actually step) is a grey oval shape and the word "One Body" written inside in grey and white writing. The top part of the Aerobic Step where your feet go is a non slip surface, this is slightly textured with a diagonal pattern and is designed with your safety in mind, this will allow your feet to grip the surface more easily to prevent you from slipping off of the step. Personally I find the non slip surface very good, I often use my step with no shoes on so either socks or bare feet, just wearing socks is probably not the most sensible ideal however the textured surface does help you to keep your grip and means that you do not have to wear trainers every time you use it.

One feature I particularly liked about the Value Aerobic Step is the adjustable height, to do this you simple adjust the feet which easy move and slot into position. By being able to adjust the height of the step you can alter the intensity of your work out at your own pace. The Value Aerobic Step is ideal for both beginners and experts, you can start off with the step low doing a gentle and gradually increase the height as you wish, you can also alter the height on a daily basis depending on how energetic you feel, if you fancy an easy work out simply lower the step or if you want to make your work out a bit harder then just raise it a little, I particularly like this idea as it means that if I am not feeling as energetic one day I can still do a workout but just not as intense. In my opinion the Value Aerobic Step is ideal to have at home you can either put on some music and do a work out to that or you can have it in front of the TV and do a workout whilst watching your favourite programme, I find that by doing a work out with this in front of the TV especially in the mornings the time really goes quickly, because I have something to focus on other than how much my legs are aching I am not constantly looking at the clock to see if I have been stepping for a decent amount of time.

The Aerobic Step is not overly bulky to store it measures 15cm high, 68.2cm wide and 28.2cm deep so over all the step is not too bulky and not too heavy to move around. I tend to keep mine in the spare room but it is not too heavy to carry up and down stairs when I want to use it. The step is definitely sturdy, the whole thing is made from plastic which is reasonably thick and appears strong, you do not step on it and it feels flimsy beneath your feet and like it is going to break from too much use. I have on occasions dropped mine whilst altering the height and it has not cracked at all, the whole thing is robust and solid, even the adjustable feet feel strong and sturdy despite them being adjustable, I did read on the tesco website reviews where people had said they didn't find it very sturdy or strong, however I didn't let this put me off and personally I have found no problems with it at all.

The Tesco Value Aerobic Step obviously comes from Tesco, I brought mine online and have not seen it available in store, although it may be in some larger stores. The step cost me £15.00, it currently has £5.00 off it and is just £10.00, however I do that think £15.00 is a good price for this item, if you go to a spots shop or a specialist shop then you would probably pay more than double for an item like this so in my opinion it is good value for money.

Overall I would definitely recommend the Tesco Value Aerobic Step, it is ideal to carry out a quick workout in the comfort of your own home. You can adjust the height of the step as and when you wish allowing you to do the intensity of work out you wish. The benefits of using a step are basically that it tones the muscles in your legs, it surprising how much just stepping up and down on this step can make your legs ache, whilst it is good for toning it also helps to keep your weight down as well, I cannot say I have noticed a difference in the muscles in my legs but I do feel happier that I am doing something along side going to the gym twice a week. This product is ideal for anyone from beginners to experts and allows you to keep fit and active within your own home, whilst a step probably isn't the most exciting form of exercise this is the ideal item for your home, it would also be ideal for someone who wants to keep fit but is unable to go to a gym, you can make the intensity of the work out as hard as you like and also the workout as long as you like so there is a lot of flexibility by using this item This product is very reasonably priced and in my opinion is well worth the money. I have been extremely pleased with my step as it has allowed me to carry on doing a more gentle workout at home since having to give up my weighted hula hoop 6 months ago. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.
