The Hydrant is a water bottle that comes with a drinking tube that means you don't need to lift the bottle to your mouth. The lid also contains an integrated handle allowing it to be hung from say a bed frame.
I came across this product by chance in an article in the Daily Mail. My daughter has cerebral palsy and I'm always looking for devices that help her achieve independence. So I went to the website and ordered one. It definitely works and it was a great delight to me to find my daughter able to help herself to a drink for the first time.
The drinking tube does not require a strong sucking action to work and if the water bottle is held above head height then it acts as a syphon and no suck action is required. The liquid flow is controlled by pressure on and off of a stopper which means the drinker can control it with no risk of too much fluid coming out.
The Hydrant is made up of three parts, a water bottle, a lid with integrated handle and a tube for hands free drinking. The bottle comes in two sizes 750ml and 1000ml. The tube itself comes in two parts, the tube and the drinking stopper at the end. The tube is inserted through the lid of the bottle. We've had a few issues with the drinking stopper coming off but this is more to do with my daughter's mouth control and I would not expect this to be a problem for most users.
The bottle should be washed like any other water bottle and the drinking tube comes with its own cleaning brush making it safe and easy to maintain. I've found this quite easy to manage and my daughter has not commented on any soapy aftertaste.
The lid to the bottle has a hole that the tube goes in. This makes it not ideal when out and about as the tube can easily slip out in a bag. I think that the majority of users would not be using it while travelling so it is not a significant weakness. The Hydrant also comes with a sports cap which would overcome this while travelling. I've not tried this option as it does not meet our requirements so cannot comment on that part.
Assembling the Hydrant is very straightforward as the tube fits directly into the cap. The cap handle can interfere when putting the lid on so extra care is needed when first placing it on the bottle head to screw on.
We had reason to contact the website and I can strongly recommend the quality of their customer care. We got a quick response followed by a phone call and our tight turn around deadline was met.
Cost wise the product is more expensive than an ordinary water bottle which I believe reflects the development needed to create it. Although our requirements are quite specialised I believe that it is value for money for anyone who needs to drink hands free. From my point of view, the independence it gave my daughter was worth every penny.
Overall I would say this is an excellent product which allows for hands free drinking controlled by the person taking the drink.
