Lexar Jumpdrive FireFly 2 GB
by Debbage
Most people will already own one of these and if not then really you must go out and buy one.
The memory stick utilises flash memory so there are no moving parts involved, (less things to go wrong) in fact I have never had a flash drive go wrong on me yet (touch wood). They work in several ways, firstly as a backup device, ... simply plug into a USB port, wait a few seconds and its installed, the whole point of USB flash drives is that they are plug and play. Anything you want to save onto the device simply drag and drop.
Secondly they can be used as a "speed boost" if your virtual memory is running low, when you connect the device a menu appears asking what you want to do, simply go to speed boost and it allocates more virtual memory to help speed up the machine. (Not to the same standard as RAM though)
Data can be easily removed from the device as well, just connect to a computer and either right click on the drive in "My Computer" and go to format, (this will delete everything) or open the drive by double clicking and delete files individually.
They are PC and Mac compatable although they made need formatting for a Mac first depending on the device but with the Lexar they come pre-formatted.
Overall a must have device, they are so small and light weight you won't even realise you're carrying one, they have a space on the cap to put onto a key ring or chain BUT the cap can come off meaning you will drop the USB device so be careful, that is really the only drawback I have about this device. Emtec C250 Flash Pen
Emtec's business model has a more ... personalised ethic than the average data storage provider. Throwing in words like 'value' and 'memories' and 'family' on literature, so their consumer market is targeted at families who want affordability storage facilities. Emtec has an impressive array of IT related products for business solutions, especially for the device hungry techie who prides themselves on performance and storage. I've been a admirer of the old BASF group years ago and it doesn't surprise me that they've moved into the personalised 'new family' arena. They're sublime in catering for portable friendly devices that is 'flash' encrypted, and are building their own signature onto the wireless VoIP agenda. Emtec has become a reliable force when it comes to memory storage; the customer service section is most definitely the less active due to content consumers across the device provider spectrum.
Emtec, being part of the mosaic umbrella of the Dexxon Group, who are owners of the epic DD Storage Inc. - Emtec has the capacity to research their own plight into the world of wireless media in audio different video formats and the mobile technology MP4. You half expect suave David Ginola to endorse the French data device brand, saying "Coz you're worth IT" of course pun intended; voice smooth as satin showing off the numerous of capabilities on their audio storage memory pen.
The real name of Emtec is 'Emtec, l'émotion technologique', understandably shortened to serve its marketing purpose; which does actively envelope 23 countries mostly around the Americas and EU. Emtec has kept their French lifestyle and standards through-out their seven decade history, derived from BASF. - It's okay I'm not going to go all French and over elaborate the French philosophy behind a 'flash-pen' product; but put it plainly the French 'adore' their battery styled digital storage pens. It is a must next to their 'French Stick'.
2GB memory storage
The enabled 2GB of storage is wanting rather, but as I put it, you cannot ever have enough of these devices; I work within a 'paperless office'; so the demand for portable devices is vital. The 2GB device carries a small portion of my media files, but what is the 'selling point' is the transfer rate. - Read speed is 10MB's per second and the Write speed is 5MB's per second. Faster than most pens that is 'flash encrypted'; subjected to the 'drag and drop' test. Not that you can accurately read the transfer rate, but it is surprisingly easier to read while storing huge raw files of up to 1GB and more. I wouldn't recommend that you can do that on a 2GB U3 flash drive unless you're using the whole purpose of the portable drive to cater for a single file.
Design is not out of the ordinary, nor is innovative like a PNY swivel cap; but it is functional and has a removable cap the old fashioned way. Click-on click-off. This is the area that needed something different for my critical eye, yet I was left a little bemused and couldn't see why the French, the stylish French, had made quite a big song and dance for the C250 series. The colours are psychedelic vibrantly earth shattering bright, yet doesn't make themselves to be known to you at night-time. I'm still waiting for the first glow in the dark USB flash-pen. If, there is a redeeming design feature it could be the fact you can see through the plastic exterior, and has an after thought key-ring at the end of the device, if you can fit it too your key-ring, it would be surprising, as the hole is tiny. Emtec is proudly displayed on the bulk of it in bold letters, no elegance is spared.
Emtec's small portable device USB 2.0 2GB Flash Drive is ideal to anyone who doesn't demand a huge amount of data all at once to store. Affordable at 7.99 GBP, I feel it is still a tad expensive. Comes with lanyard, and is Vista Compatible. Simply just slot the flash pen into on of your available USB ports and without a driver your workstation will detect the portable hard drive. The interface is easy to use and is bog standard. It is universal to all workstations; hence, the meaning of USB - Universal Serial Bus.
I don't see Emtec as the brand with attitude that parades itself with pride available on the product literature. There is no heirs and graces with this flash pen; especially as Emtec values itself on the rampant French flair that has evolved through its fashion over the 40 years. It certainly hasn't rubbed shoulders with the storage devices. However, with such a huge financial gun in Dexxon, the tide could turn and Emtec role in the wireless digital device arena could ruffle some feathers in 2010. Worth a punt if you're a betting kind.
