Bytestor Dataferry 16 GB
by Lunaria I bought this Bytestor flash drive around 7 months ago to replace an 8GB memory stick which had become rather worn and unreliable. I chose Bytestor due to good reviews and opted for the pink colour as I thought it would be easier to notice in my bag. A USB flash drive is a handy and efficient little device for storing and transporting ... all manner of files. I often need to transfer documents and images from one computer to another and find this the quickest and easiest way of doing so. Measuring approximately 7 cm long and 2.5 cm wide this memory stick is made of tough transparent plastic in a vivid pink colour. It feels sturdy and in my view is nicely designed with curved edges and matt silver strips which run along either side and are formed into a handy loop at each end. As it is so small a flat and slightly concave surface both top and bottom makes it easy to hold onto and grasp when pulling off the cap. After inserting the flash drive into a USB port I can access files instantly and move by the drag and drop method. It is very straightforward, even for me. I store a large amount of back-up files, photos, videos and music on the flash drive and then regularly create folders for transporting data to different computers. Deleting and adding take very little time. With a 16 GB storage capacity, I doubt I will ever use absolutely all the space but it's good to know it is there. You can see how much space has been used and is still available in properties and from there you can also run defragmentation and error checking programmes. The cap fits very securely and snaps shut with a satisfying sound, I really couldn't imagine the cap becoming loose. The memory stick is often in my handbag jumbling around with everything else in there and yet there are no scratches or dents on it, it really is quite tough. The bright pink colour makes spotting the flash drive in my bag easier and I've attached a soft beaded keyring to one of the loops so I can also feel my way to identifying it quickly. A very handy, well designed flash drive which works efficiently and I feel confident using. The Bytestor comes in other colours; dark blue, light blue and red. This one is currently available from Amazon for £9.99 which I think is good value for money. Thanks for reading this review x © Lunaria 2012 Read the complete review |

Bytestor Dataferry 16 GB
by Snofam123 For me, this USB Flash drive does exactly what I want it to - stores lots of backed up documents, photos and other data onto a compact little stick that I can access swiftly and easily when needed. When I started looking for a High Speed USB drive I was astonished by the prices in various stores that I visited and was certain ... I would only want to pay a reasonable amount and so would have to suffer on the amount of storage space I would get. However, after a quick visit to Amazon I was amazed when I saw this little device that was a massive 16GB for only about a tenner! So with this amazement I decided to go ahead and purchase it. When I first received the USB stick I directly converted a whole load of files onto it which surprisingly only took around 25 minutes for all the data to be transferred to the drive, and that must have been hundreds of photos and documents, and probably over a hundred different folders! Over time when I have added new folders to store to the drive these are usually converted within seconds or at most a minute or two if it may be a folder of pictures. Another important point is how quickly the USB responds once inserted into my laptop - for me it reacts very quickly from the initial step of plugging it into my USB port, to then opening up the drive and quickly gaining access to all my folders and files with just a few clicks. It's also helpful that when the stick is in use this can be identified by the flashing light that occurs from the inside of the stick. I've also found in the past that some USB drives are flimsy or feel like they could break rather easily. This Bytestor feels very solid and rigid to me and I expect it to last a long time. The piece that clips on and off at the end which you remove to use it is also solid and clicks on tightly in place when not in use making it feel secure and safe to store away. Not only that but it can be tied or attached to something due to the 'loop' on the opposite end. I'm sure some people would find this useful to have it on something round there neck if they were using it often in one day. The last point I will make is that this product also comes in various colours to choose from which is another added bonus! I have the lovely red one. Overall I find this High Speed USB Flash Drive does the job perfectly and is also very good value for money, which is what I find most important! Thanks for reading! Read the complete review |

Bytestor Dataferry 4 GB
by steves001 ~~Not so much a backup, more a way of life?~~ My Bytestor 'memory stick' is without doubt one of the handiest gifts I've had in ages. It's been in daily use ever since I received it well over a year ago. I almost take for granted its usefulness, simplicity and reliability - but not quite! Hence this brief non-technical ... review. ~~Beauty in simplicity~~ This little device has proved to be an excellent solution for quick selective (ad hoc) backups and for copying or transferring files from one machine to another, particularly photos and word-processed documents, between laptops and desktop computers. Other methods now seem cumbersome by comparison. It's simpler than setting up a 'network share' or using disc-based devices. I believe Bytestor even offer these in shocking pink, if that appeals, though mine is just a subtle blue! ~~Value for money 'spec'~~ As this was a present, I can't be certain of the original purchase price, but storage costs continue to fall and this is now quite inexpensive. Available for under £6, it's simple, quick and reliable with enough capacity for most everyday purposes. When I got this it seemed to be almost state-of-the-art but, needless to say, similar products are now available with much higher capacities and even faster data transfer rates. Without going into too many technicalities, the Bytestor 4Gb USB 'Dataferry' may not have quite the latest specification but it still seems quite sufficient for most purposes. It's aptly named, as 'ferrying data' is exactly what I mostly do with it. Advertised as a 'high speed flash drive', it certainly seems fast enough to me. I believe it's 'USB 2.0 compliant' - not quite the latest standard but still quite fast and compatible with previous USB (1.1) equipment. Being solid state, there are of course no moving parts to go wrong; nor does it need any external power supply. It's also fully 'plug and play' - so no complicated installation required. I've used this regularly with various versions of Windows and experienced no problems whatsoever. But for other operating systems and full compatibility information, best refer to manufacturer. [See links below] ~~What it's not~~ I wouldn't rely on this as a main backup or archiving medium. I've been through a number of different generations of technologies for this, from tapes, multiple floppy discs ('disks'?) of various sizes, 'Zip' drives, optical devices (CDs and DVDs), but now rely largely on USB external hard drives. Like solid state 'flash drives' these are convenient but somewhat less portable. [If interested, for details of my main backup device, perhaps refer to my previous 'Seagate' review. This has been a lifesaver recently following the sad demise of an old desktop PC hard disc!] The 4Gb Bytestor drive may not be the best choice either if you need to handle very large files, e.g. video or other space-consuming media files, un-optimised or uncompressed formats. Many alternatives are available for such purposes, including higher capacity drives in the same range. ~~Design and usability~~ As stated previously, this is straightforward to use, with standard USB connectivity and genuine 'plug and play'. Just drag and drop your files intuitively. I do appreciate the protective plug cap, designed to sit on the other end of the drive when this is in use - and not lost so far! Both parts have a loop that can be attached to a keyring, which is a nice touch. ~~Dimensions~~ This may not be the smallest device of its type on the market but it is quite compact at just c. 7 mm long, including the loops at each end, according to my rough measurements. ~~Durability~~ This product is not really designed for heavy duty use. The casing is constructed from what seems fairly lightweight plastic. But for regular domestic use, in our household this has stood the test of time, so far withstanding all normal usage plus the inevitable occasional 'knocks & drops' ... ~~What's in a name?~~ Call it a 'Pen drive', 'flash drive', 'memory stick' or 'USB stick', it's all the same to me! Having said that, I quite like the 'Dataferry' concept. ~~Advantages~~ * Reliable, well specified for the price ~~Disadvantages~~ * Not quite the latest specification ~~Verdict~~ * Good value, reliable memory stick ~~Recommendation~~ * Well worth considering a device from this range for reliability and acceptable performance at a reasonable price. ~~Related links~~ * Bytestor website : http://bytestor.com Note to self: Find out more about 'Cloud' backup, remaining sceptical but open-minded. And now ... time to back up this review! [© SteveS001, 2011. A version of this original review may be found on other review sites] Read the complete review |
