Kingston DataTraveler 101 G2 16 GB
Advantages: Cheap. Large capacity. Stylish design.
Disadvantages: Tiny hole for tying it to something. No string included.
I've recently had the misfortune of losing my digital photos and music from my old computer. With it being out of use nowadays, i hadn't backed it up and hence suffered the consequences! Therefore i decided to buy something that could store my data should history repeat itself. The only specifications were that it had to be cheap and at least 16GB. I finally settled for the Kingston DataTraveler based on its high recommendation rating on Amazon.
The USB stick arrived in a thin cardboard package with a see-through "bubble" so you can see the device. On the front there is a range of symbols to tell you which computers and files are compatible, along with the specifications of the USB stick. On the back there is a chart to show which systems it can be used with, along with relevant recycling and contact information. If you have never used one before there is also a diagram to show you where to plug it in! There is no instruction manual included (just incase you are wondering)!
The USB stick is silver and black with the Kingston logo in the middle and information written in white. I purchased the 16GB version, but there is also an 8BG one in red. The device has a swivel motion which i find really appealing because it protects the main part of the USB stick from damage. However, there is a small amount of space at the sides for dirt and dust to enter which is quite hazardous to the device. The USB stick measures roughly 5 x 3 x 2.5cm so it is a very compact. This has both positive and negative points. It is great for storing away in your pencil-case/purse but it can be easily lost! There is a hole at one end so you can tie it to something, however it is VERY small and would not fit on my key-ring, which is where i normally keep mine. I should point out that a string is NOT supplied with the device, which was a bit of a let down too.
I am probably not the best person to tell you about how fast it is but on the packaging it states that it reads at 10MB/s and writes at 5MB/s. If, like me, you are not a techie, i can assure you that it works as fast as any other USB stick i've used, and i haven't had any problems to date. When formatted you lose a bit of the memory which is a bit disappointing, but it still has a large enough capacity for my music collection!
I purchased this USB stick from Amazon for £10.89 which i think is great value for money considering its storage capacity. You can also get it from play.com for the same price. All in all i think this is a great USB stick for storing and transferring data. I would have no worries about getting another, because, lets face it, it is cheaper alternative to an external hard drive!! I give it 5*
