Being a teacher, I have owned many USB flash drives, and many of them have not lasted longer than 6 months of constant use. The PNY 4GB has lasted a year so far and has not shown any signs of stopping! I paid £15 for two of these from PC World. Not the cheapest, but certainly worth it in my view.
The design itself is ingenious. There is no lid to lose, and there is a handy inverted plastic loop at the end so that you can attach the drive to a keyring etc. The reason I mention this, is I have had many USB drives that have a plastic loop that sticks out - this often snaps off.
The unique twisting motion that uncovers the USB connection is brilliant, meaning very little dust gets into the end and it is protected from damage. The USB drive itself is made from one solid piece of plastic, meaning it is less easily bent and damaged - a must if you use your USB drive as much as I do.
In terms of technical data, I can tell you that I'm not really up on what it all means. A more computer-minded friend of mine informed me that the PNY is good because of the encryption and also you can set up a password to prevent access to your drive should you need to. I must say I haven't made use of this, but since finding out, I am seriously considering it.
One thing I have noticed is that no matter which computer I use the drive on, it is always very fast to load. Having read another review on this USB drive, there is apparently pre-loaded software (ReadyBoost) that is there to do just that.
Given that I connect and disconnect my PNY USB drive over 8 times a day, in 5 different PCs/laptops I am very impressed that this one has lasted so well. Others (Scandisk, Freecom) have failed to keep up.
Should you want a larger memory, 16GB flash drives are available.
The PNY Attache` Optima 4G USB flash drive is a high speed flash drive memory stick, perfect for use with the readyboost feature incorporated in Windows Vista. I have used Windows Vista for well over a year now and by itself it isn't very fast on my 2 year old laptop. I had read a lot on the internet about the readyboost feature and wanted to see just how much performance i could get out of it. I plugged my old sandisk 512 MB flashdrive in and didn't really notice a difference. Then i came across this little gem while shopping for what i thought was a very reasonable price. I plugged it in and all i can say is "Thank You PNY". The difference in speed brought my overall system rating up .1 point, which doesn't sound like much unless you have actually had experience with Vista. If you have Windows Vista and want extra speed out of your system then this product is perfect for you at a very reasonable price.

~ PNY-- Attache Optima -4GB ~
The Optima is the latest of the Attache flash drive ranges. Only a couple of months old and is notable different, (not in style, but capabilities) to their Attache predessors; even though the drive is still an external drive that has a mandatory socket device that is able to connect via USB; the computer instantly recognises the addition of the driver and is prompted into action; therefore no need for re-booting. The PNY Attache; is a clever device that swivels within itself as a means of protecting the head-pin. The Optima is completely capless, as the whole memory key is an all in one device. The main difference is that the Optima has some great security measures installed; especially now that data requires as much security as possible. Well, the the Optima has an encryption program that makes it very difficult for unwarranted users to gain access to your valuable files. the drive comes complete with the "Carry It Easy" software - 128 bit AES encryption will protect your data whilst synchronising your internet favourites, data and mail box. This is something for the UK's Home Office I feel. Still an impressive 7.2cm long; perfect to fit onto your key-ring without it sticking out like a sore thumb. The adjustable swivel motion is unique to all PNY products; and they are leading by example; this along with a 24MB/s quick driver reaction speed, it's a quick starter when transferring files via USB 2.0.
Please note - The Attache Optima caters for just the 4GB and the 8GB so far on the memory drives available at your local retailler.
What is 4GB of memory?
4GB is the amount of space that the USB Drive has available in storage on that particular drive. It also means that the transfer rate may be even quicker if the storage facility is extensive, though not always the case, as it depends on the product manufacturer. Please note that when the drive is full no further files will be able to be transferred and a prompt will appear claiming this. What I have found is that when transferring data across from PC to the key it certainly has a fast transfer rate and this alone could make you unaware of what size files you are transferring, and it is deceptive.
~ The PNY Optima is tough as old boots ~
The PNY attaché range is especially designed for a young student market in mind and the Optima is no exception. - Burning the candle at both ends as many students do tend for the odd mis-haps. The Optima, has got all that in hand as it is very robust in design and with the added encrypted software, makes files safe as houses if left unattended; making the driver useless for anyone else who seeks the opportunity to take advantage. The Optima is water resistant. Yep, it really is. Immune to any liquid practical jokes. The Optima could still do with a data storage measure that shows up externally on the driver; but I'm only really being picky here.
~Your Computer System Requirements are ~
-# Minimal #-
Windows: 2000, XP, Vista; is recommended. This product is compatible on all computer platforms - PC/MAC. Check on specifications on the outer packaging for further details.
~ The Optima Price ~
The price for a 4GB PNY attaché Flash drive at retail price is a respectable £28.99. Worth every penny -- 8.5/10 value for money.
~ PNY - The Optima Verdict ~
Yep, impressive; I like it and love the added software encryption. If, you have found the PNY on the side irritating, I'm sorry it is just due to the fact I've done so many reviews based around these devices that it is a form of product identity recognition for myself. I will give this flash memory device 9/10. It is surprisingly a simple design for a clever contraption. The only thing that it lacks is style. It's clumsy look is sad, as it is a clever piece of design. However, for functionality it ticks all the right boxes, and few unexpected ones as well. I'm excited at what else PNY has in store for us consumers.
Thanks for your reads and rates.
