Kingston Genuine 16 GB TF Micro SD Card
Advantages: Quick, cheap and easy to use.
Just when I thought it was about time to retire my 3.5" floppy disks, along come these little micro SD memory cards that are less than the size of a postage stamp, but have infinitely more capacity than my first computer ever had. Such is the world of miniaturisation .................
I've got an HTC Desire HD mobile phone, that takes these micro SD cards, and hence, I wanted to get a reasonably large capacity storage card to give me plenty of space to store things on. I bought this 16GB version off of Amazon for about £18 a few months ago, although search around and you can probably get them for around the £15 mark now, and there are numerous brands and sizes widely available. My previous experience with Kingston memory products has always shown that they are high quality products, and hence I had every confidence in the technical expertise of this card. I wasn't disappointed.
What is it? The card itself is tiny, measuring 15 mm by 11 mm, and not much thicker than a couple of sheets of paper. Being so small, it is hard to imagine that it has a 16GB storage capacity, but it does. Not so long ago, we used to have SD storage cards which were the bigger ones measuring 31 mm by 24 mm, and were commonly used in cameras and portable games machines. Nowadays with the drive to make everything smaller, the next generation of memory cards are these microSDHC cards - micro because of its small size, SD standing for 'Secure Digital' because of the way that the information is stored on the card, and the HC standing for 'High Capacity' which refers to the family of cards with storage capacities in the range of 4 to 32 GB, and these types of larger capacity cards are increasingly being used in mobile phones.
Of note, one of the benefits of purchasing this particular Kingston card is the fact that you also get an SD sized adaptor card, which has a twofold benefit. Initially, you can just slot your microSDHC card into the adaptor and then use it as an ordinary SD card in your old camera or Gameboy, gaining all the capacity of the microSDHC card in a SD card environment. But secondly, you can use this arrangement to load files up to your computer. Computers don't tend to have a microSDHC slot, but do have an SD card slot, and hence, this adaptor enables you to achieve easy file transfer to your computer.
What's it like to use? In a word - fast and easy. Using it on my HTC phone and storage and reading to and from the card is pretty much seamless and quick. Use the adaptor to plug it into my computer and my Windows based system recognises it as a separate drive, which I can then open up and drag files back and forth as required. And as yet, I still have loads of capacity to use, despite a few films and videos, numerous albums and photos all being stored on the card.
In summary, what can you say? MicroSDHC is the way ahead with storage cards, and whilst the 16GB version is perhaps mid-range in the capacity range now, give it a few months and this will probably be towards the bottom of that range then. You have a card that is fast and easy to use, all for a relatively cheap price (of about £1 per GB), where you are not only getting a great microSDHC card, but you are also getting that useful and versatile SD adaptor card as well. Hence, a 5* recommendation.
Summary: For around £1 per GB, and with a free SD adaptor, you can't go wrong.
