Advantages: Small, lightweight, reliable, fast, dedicated slot of MacBook Pro.
Disadvantages: Expensive compared to a USB stick of the same capacity.
SD Cards are much more discreet than USB sticks, since they are smaller, lighter and can be placed anywhere in your clothing without a huge bulge appearing. Perfect then for MI6 Operatives, but I just use it for moving photo's and documents...
The reason I bought this was to make use of the SD slot in my MacBook Pro, otherwise what's the point of the slot? It slots in perfectly with a little bit sticking out the end. It connects with Mac OSX instantly and appears in finder at the bottom of the list. You can also see this card in Disk Utility although I dare not touch any settings in here!
The plastic is quite thick and cannot be bent. It is really well built and mine hasn't cracked or chipped. The backside of this thing is just the same with more blue plastic and golden metal strips where your computer reads the card.
The sticker is stuck on very well and takes some serious picking to lift the corners off and it's very difficult to get the sticker of by hand.
There is a lock function which turns this into a read and write only card but I have yet to find a use for this, for personal purposes this is an irrelevant feature for me but I suppose if you leave this plugged in and someone else uses the computer then you know they won't be able to edit it's contents, until they pull it out and unlock it. For kids though, this might be a useful feature since they don't know what to do with it (or even what it is).
It is quite a fast little card, it loads almost instantly on Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 and can begin transferring files immediately. It will moan and groan if you pull it out without ejecting it. MP3 files can transfer in seconds, and I have transferred 10 HD photo's in less than 10 seconds so excellent transfer speeds.
I have found this quite a reliable card too, I've never had any corrupt data, all my files have remained intact and it's never broken a file or had an error.
Overall this is a fantastic little thing to have, especially if you happen to be a spy sneaking data out of North Korea on a secret mission. Otherwise, a great device for moving photo's to and from different computers. The latter of which is probably the more likely use i suspect. Highly recommended.
Summary: Excellent little thing, very handy and highly recommended.
