The Daily Bread Co-operative Ltd is based in Nortahmpton and Cambridge. It was established by 9 christians in Northampton in 1980 and then in Cambridge in 1990. They work and live by christian values, supporting fair trade. Their business is not run in the normal way and they pay by means and not status. They claim that the packer at the till could be earing more than the manager of the store because they have a larger family to look after. Some of the profit goes to third world causes. The Co-op used to have such status; referred to, almost reverentially, as the Co-operative movement. Everyone had their dividend number and more than a shilling in the pound on all their spending, translated this would be more than five pence in the pound. Not that I'm old enough to remember, I heard about it in stories passed down from one generation to the next in my family. When you think about it they were the original cashback shopping! I think they do still operate a loyalty scheme but is only a shadow of the past glories, when, as I have said, everyone had a divy book. They are stuggling against the new breed of supermarkets but hopefully they can ...  Read the complete review

This shop is situated on a main road in Newton le Willows. It is convenient to all the locals, although, does not have any parking for passing trade, so t his often causes problems on the main road. The staff in this shop all live in the local area so have a good understanding of what the customer wants. The is always good comaradary in the shop. Food here such as bread and milk is stocked fresh every day. This store is known for having fresher bread than any of the local big named supermarkets in the area. There is a wide variety of choice here. You can either purchase one of the lunch meal deals, or you can pick something more ...  Read the complete review

In my younger days my dad used to go into a health food shop, and occasionally drag me, and sometimes my brothers along, in my town(in the days when they had such a thing) in it was all thing good bins of dried fruits etc, and my dad never minded what we picked up, as long as it was healthy. I noticed my dad liked the daily bread brands, and he always said they were the best. Anyway, 2 years ago, talking to a friend at work about my son, who at the time was really poorly, was constantly sick, had red blotchy skin, was not gaining weight and had a severe anaphlaptic shock which scared the life out of me, had no help from the health proffession wher I used to ...  Read the complete review

Tucked away off a service lane in Bedford Road, Northampton lies a quirky health food store that many people in Northampton, I imagine, know nothing about. An unassuming shop that doesn’t shout about what it offers - but when you step inside you think it really should, particularly as Northampton is striving to put itself on the map, as a Fairtrade town. WHAT IS IT? A health food shop with branches in Northampton and Cambridge – selling all sorts of herb teas, beans and pulses, soya-based products, flour, dried fruit, supplements, plus lots more - run by a Christian-based wholefood workers co-operative. I wasn’t sure how this ...  Read the complete review
