Advantages: Great for gifts, personal shopping, and a good giggle!
Disadvantages: takes a long time to look at everything, and can get very busy
M&M's World have stores in New York, Las Vegas, and Orlando, although personally I have only ever been to the New York store, so my review will be based on this shop in particular!
Literally everything M&Ms can be found in this shop...from dozens of different colours of M&Ms, to limited edition dispensers, clothes for all the family, pyjamas, bath towels, toothbrushes, collectors pins, underwear, games, toys, bed linen, guitars, chess sets, hats, scarves, caps...you name it, they've got it!!
The New York store is located in Times Square, you can't miss it really, there's a huge M&M spinner outside! And inside the store you'll find three floors of fascinating M&M based stock...and a giant M&M figurine which sins around, and is a great photo opportunity!
The store is pen from 9am-midnight, so there's really no excuse for not ticking it off of your sight-seeing list, and it really is worth a visit even if you don't buy anything.
The most striking things about walking into the store, is that there's a HUGE wall, full of tubes of M&Ms, in dozens and dozens of colours on each floor...you can fill up bags of whichever colour, or combinations of colours you like, and they have suggestions, such as colours for different teams, and countries flags, as well as special mixes of colours for Christmas amongst others. We felt the bags were really quite expensive to fill up, but do make a great holiday momento or gift! There are also premixed bags which are a little cheaper, and tubes/boxes/packets of all kinds of M&Ms as well as some gorgeous limited editions including mint chocolate!
Inside, staff members are wandering around with limited edition, or exclusive products for you to try, and also to help you find what you're looking for...we found they were really useful as suggesting presents we could take home, not pushy, but full of ideas and enthusiasm and even suggested we went away to think about it before making a decision. I know staff in shops are trained to behave in this manner, but they did all come across as very genuine.
Another huge advantage to the store being open so many hours, is that we were offered the choice of leaving our purchases in the shop and collecting them on our return to our hotel, and as we were staying just down the road, it was a really useful offer to take up! Shopping without the pain of carrying all the bags around with you, brilliant!
I bought some great Christmas pyjamas, a red t-shirt with the two signature M&Ms on opening Christmas presents under the tree, and some fleecy bottoms that were green with lots and lots of giant M&Ms on! (They're REALLY comfy!) When I looked, they didn't have the size I needed on the rack, and so we asked an assistant if they would have any more out the back/downstairs, she said she didn't think so, they'd been really popular but that she'd have a look for us and to keep shopping and she'd find us...I was feeling a bit disappointed as after 5-10 minutes she hadn't reappeared, but we were still looking at presents and decided to go upstairs and have a look around... a few minutes later, the assistant came running up the stairs looking for us, phone in hand and told us that they didn't have any in, but that they were definitely getting a delivery in that night, and if I wanted she could make sure some were put by for me straight away, and delivered to my hotel! Again, I know that's her job, but she really could have just said, "no, sorry we don't have any in and won't be getting any more either", or "we might be getting some in, you'd just have to come back and check"
The shop was very busy, but it was the week before Christmas, so New York in general is very busy, you just have to expect that, but no matter how busy it got in there, the staff remained calm and pleasant and still nothing was too much trouble. We had to queue for a little while, but it's a popular shop and at one of the busiest shopping times of the year, what else can you expect! And as soon as they realised there was a queue forming, they opened up more tills, and the service was prompt, efficient and yet still personal.
I highly recommend a visit to one of these shops if you happen to be travelling near one, even if you don't wish to purchase anything, just looking around at all the wonderful and sometimes weird things they have to offer is a great experience!
Summary: Shop for EVERYTHING M&Ms!
