Advantages: really cheap branded products, savings to be had

Disadvantages: they have to make their profit somewhere - think if the item's really worth the price

Quality Save or Home and Bargain are a chain of discount stores across the North West of England. I first discovered them when I was volunteering with a young teenager. We had a daily budget for food and she suggested that we spend it in this store - we came out with absolutely tonnes of stuff for the £5 we had to spend (albeit junk food!).

In terms of confectionery, drinks and crisps, many of the products are branded names such as Cadburys, Haribo etc and prices are normally a third to half off normal prices for the products. Some of the items may have their packaging in predominantly other languages - but how often do you read the product packaging? In addition they have a range of medical store cupboard basics that come in with similar savings and branded names. They have some household goods, toys and books. Often these are the sort that you will find in discount stores and are end-of-line items or unbranded. The prices on these are often very low. I bought a 20 piece home safety set for when my son is older for £1.99 - the items are just as functional, but a fraction of normal prices.

When in Quality Save, it's easy to get carried away, always bear in mind what the product is normally worth and what quality the item you're buying is. I bought some pyjamas in there for £4.99. I wanted them for just after I'd given birth so the quality wasn't too much of an issue, but they definitely weren't high street quality. Remember they have to make their profit somewhere, so be cautious about the item you're buying.

Summary: well worth a look, but shop carefully.
