Advantages: convenient, large selection for a small store
Disadvantages: slightly inflated prices
Now I know that there is a lot of controversy over Tesco's especially on the issues of where they place there stores and how many stores they have. I do agree with this to an extent as in the last two years 6 Tesco express stores have opened in Nottingham City Centre alone which I think is just far too excessive. But I do not drive and rely quite heavily on my local Tesco express store as it is literally a 2 minute walk from my home so it is extremely convenient.
My local Tesco Express opens from 7.00am - 11.00pm, 7 days per week. I think this is excellent opening hours and allows me to visit it before work in the morning if needed and in the evening if I have found I have forgot to purchase something. The only time I have had a problem with this was one evening when I had been working late and thought I would pop in to get a pizza and bottle of wine to take home. It was 10.45pm and I had just got off the bus across the road from the store, as I crossed over the road I noticed that a couple were stood at the door trying to get the attention of a member of staff inside. When I got to the doors myself I realised that the store was actually closed and that the member of staff was signalling this as she had just locked the doors. There was no sign of an error such as a power cut and the staff member offered no explanation and just walked away. I was very disappointed and the take away across the road got my money that night. I actually wrote to Tesco to complain about this especially as the huge sign on the outside of the store clearly states the opening hours in some proud statement splashed across the full lenght of the outer window. Tesco responded with a letter of apology and a £10 gift card which I thought was a nice gesture and rectified my frustration from that evening.
My local Tesco express as recently been refurbished but I have noticed that they are all laid out very similar and generally contain the same products. My store has the following sections:
- Tinned food
- Fresh fruit and Vegetables
- Sandwiches and cold drinks
- Meat & ready meals
- Cooked meats and deli items
- Bottled water
- Crisps and Biscuits
- Chocolate and Sweets
- Laundry and Cleaning
- Toilet rolls and tissues
- Newspaper & Magazine
- Toiletries and medical
- Frozen food
As you can see they fit a lot of items into one small store. I find this very convenient and they normally always have the items that I need. Now I do not do my main shop here but if I need milk, bread or an emergency bar of chocolate then it is certainly handy. The only negative really is that the express stores tend to be a little more expensive than the main one but I guess they realise that they can get away with this as a convenience charge, and I will admit that when I am desperate for an item that this does not deter me even thought I have a little mutter to myself!
Apart from the early closing experience I have always been very happy with the service from the staff in my local store. A couple of the staff members have been there for some time now so they engage in conversation when they serve you regularly which I think is nice and makes you forget that it is actually a Tesco you are in and not an independent store. Also whenever I have been overcharge or have to ask for help the staff have always been friendly and efficient. I have never experience long delays at the checkout either, my store is only small but they have three manned tills and two self-service and they always call another staff member if more than two people are waiting.
Overall I may not agree totally with what Tesco represents and I think there are nicer supermarkets out there but for convenience I will certainly still be shopping in my local express store. So four stars from me, one star lost for slightly inflated prices.
Summary: a store for convenience
