I am a massive fan of Tesco's being the super market leading and known for all of it's very cheap prices on products and massive selection in product range. I do shop at various other stores and super markets besides Tesco's but I find that Tesco's have the cheapest prices for all kinds of different branded products such as Kellogs, Cadburys, Dolmio's etc. I also have never had a problem with the store or it's products and never once have had to complain about any thing. I will say though that the prices for the super markets delivery service is very steep at around £4-8 per delivery, and you also have to have at least £45 pounds worth of shopping before you are eligible for delivery services which I think is unfair if your a single person wanting to shop there and not needing to spend over fourty five pounds. Compared to other super markets such as Asda and Sainsburys the delivery price is much cheaper even as cheap as £1 for your delivery slot and you only have to spend a minimum of twenty to twenty five pounds to get delivery which I feel is much more reasonable. Also I have a problem with the fact that tesco stores only deliver to certain areas, I don't see why they have to limit the delivery areas. Besides these minor problems I have with Tesco's I am a loyal customer and continue to shop with them as prices on most products is very cheap and reasonable and they have a very wide range of different food and drink products, a clothing range and health and beauty range as well as a home sections selling all kinds of things for home decorating such as chairs, lamps, candles, rugs etc. It is liturally everything you need in one shop.
I am no fan of tesco for various reasons but they are in no way on a par with sainsburys and waitrose and cannot be trusted compared to cheaper supermarkets such as asda, lidl and aldi.
I would occasionally shop at tesco and I found their clubcard points system a very good one, however as the years have past I have become more and more intolerant to tesco and their low standard of food and abhorrent welfare standards.
There has many a programme on tescos animal welfare from Hugh Fernley Wittingstall, which has also exposed many lies regarding welfare, however whenever I have, seldomly, bought meat from here I have been shocked by its quality. They appear to have no care over their animals and I find the food generally not good quality.
It is certainly a mid range supermarket being cheaper than sainsburys but more expensive than asda and I feel the mass production and huge amount of stores that they have produced over the years is the reason as to why it has started to fall somewhat.
Saying that, I feel that they are trying to pull themselves back a little and one major turning point is becoming joint partners with giraffe restaurants and many tescos will now have this restaurant linked to them which is great.
I also find that the hot counter serving hot wraps and soup and the salad bar especially is great for a quick and easy lunch on the go but again the standard needs to be increased tenfold. Greggs do a hot soup and it is significantly better than tesco.
Overall Im not a fan, I think they have the chance to rectify themselves and they would be able to do this more so by redeeming themselves with animal welfare standards and production and better quality of food overall but its going to take a long time.
Tesco had previously always been my favourite of the three leading supermarket stores, that was until I had a problem with them. On entering the store on many occasions I always notices that their toilets were filthy and looked as though they had not been cleaned for ages, and the toilet roll dispensers seemed to open on their own and one cut my hand and one fell open and hit my niece on the head. I also experienced some homophobia when I entered the store whilst holding hands with my wife. When raising these issues with the customer complaints department, I received no calls back from the store and no apology from any member of staff. None of the issues have been resolved and I can categorically say I will not be stepping foot in there again!
Their food and items have always been a good price and most items are of a reasonable quality, but they do not care about their customers or take their concerns seriously. And as they are faced with such stiff competition from the other big stores and Aldi (which is pretty much the favourite for most people now!) you would think they might want to keep the customers that they had but no.
Choosing between which supermarket to shop at in today's market place can be tough. We are generally all looking to tighten our belts these days and so want to be sure we're getting the most for our money right? Enter Tesco, now a massive supermarket chain that claims to price match the other big supermarkets or give you the difference back in the form of a voucher for your next shop.
This all sounds great in theory, were it not for the fact that other supermarkets like Sainsbury's are also doing the same thing. Not only this but as a consumer, unless you want to spend hours going round all of the different stores comparing prices each week then you're forced to take their word for it. This is uncomfortable enough as it is, without the added complication of the all of the various half price/buy one get one free offers that start to complicate things even further, not to mention all off the different brand 'levels' that each chain has making it impossible to know if you're (literally in some cases) comparing apples with apples i.e. is Tesco's Finest always compared with Sainsbury's Taste the Difference?
But price obsessions aside, Tesco does a pretty good job. The stores are all generally in convenient places, with the large ones having good parking. The selection is quite strong, and increasingly you'll find more and more world foods being catered for, particularly around the big city. The only gripe I would have is that quite often their shelves are in need of refilling and it can be annoying to go in for a specific product only to find someone's not got round to filling it up.
If you want to see the effects of the welfare cuts and immigration in the United Kingdom you only need look at Tesco. Like other big supermarket stores they have seen big falls in profits and in Tesco’s case had to fib about the share price just to keep the company above the Plimsol Line to pay that share dividend. When I worked for them back in the day they were a booming company as they mastered diversification of products and services. Now the cut price Scandinavian supermarkets have moved in like Lidle and Aldi and it looks grim for Tesco. If the biggest companies in the world stop growing they tend to get top heavy ad fall over. Tesco can not afford to stand still.
When Cameron got elected he didn’t hesitate to blame the poor and unemployed for the financial collapse. What he doesn’t tell you is of the total yearly welfare bill of 120 billion pounds just 3% is Jobseekers Allowance, which is less than the annual combined overseas aid arm industry subsidy, often the same thing. When you strip money from the welfare bill you strip money from the economy, food an essential part of life. Every penny you give to the unemployed is spent in that week. If its beer, scratch cards or nappies it’s spent, end of. It doesn’t drive the economy but it’s quickly returned to it. So if money is taken out of the economy it hurts our biggest retailer. Through the recession Waitrose profits remained stable. Tesco’s have dropped 27% since the Tories arrived. Cameron’s welfare cuts nearly broke up the Union last week as the poor voted ‘Yes’ and they could ruin our best companies.
Tesco also failed in its attempt to crack the overseas markets. Instead of just taking over a chain like Wal-Mart did in the UK to get market share Tesco decided to arrogantly build stores and spend big, especially in the US, returning with their tail between their legs. The burgeoning Indian middle-class in search of British brands is next on the radar and Tesco have learnt some lessons, buying a 50% stake in an India supermarket chain to kick it off. But the striking loss in the United Kingdom may curtail that growth and this huge company unable to recover profits as the pure weight of it collapses in on itself. It’s ripe for a Chinese takeover. Like all retail stores profits are driven by low staff wages and that is the future of our economy but as fuel and transport costs rise then consumer simply don’t have the cash to buy a new TV or mobile phone from Tesco and so I can only see its profits falling further. The only increased retailer on the British high street are pawn and charity shops, a vital part of our rather sad economy right now. The Tories have let the bankers off scot free and you, the workers, are going to have to balance the books.
Hi I work for Tesco from 3 months at night shifts 10pm-7am as stocker. I do my best but sometimes delivery are to big or they camiing to late and no mather how fast you work I still can't finish to 7am and then my manager saying that I have to stay and finish my job. Sometimes I have to stay until 8am or even 9am, this time is not a overtime, this time I work for free. They saying that my working time is not from 10pm-7am but until I finish my work, but no mather how long I work 8,9 hour I still have paid for 7,5h. Can they made my stay longer and work for free?!
I work in a Tesco superstore and I have witnessed on numerous occasions, line managers and team leaders gossiping about people and back stabbing people they don't like.
In my first month of working there I was bullied my my team leaders and line manager. I then moved to a new department in the same store and things were fine for a while until we had a new line manager. This line manager makes my life hell, I get criticised for giving customers too many carrier bags, I will look up from where I am sitting at my checkout and see her and one of my team leaders giving me filthy looks. She talks down to me and snaps at me. It's really horrible. On my days off I just lie in bed all day feeling so depressed and stressed because working for Tesco is getting me down.
Don't work for Tesco, you will live to regret it!
NEVER WORK FOR TESCO. The management teams' attitude towards staff is awful! I felt bullied by senior managers within store & gave me no support what so ever when I needed it. When I took this to grievance I got nowhere! Also I had a lot of issues with my contract & had nowhere near enough training when I moved into their opticians department. After 3 years of working for the company I have NOTHING good to say about them! Leaving was the best decision I ever made! :)
Tesco is just a complete joke. I never received any training whilst being a general assistant. Suddenly I was placed on the options as the store needed to send two candidates. I didnt even get a chance to complete that as I was whisked to a different store as a checkout manager. I had no experience, staff were so fed up and had no morale.I was made work ridiculous shifts with not enough staff!!!! It actually led me to a mini breakdown where I drove to work, took one look at it and drove home crying. I just couldnt cope, horrible horrible place!!!!! Just used
I have worked in a number of organisations, but NEVER have I felt so low as working for Tesco in a Distribution Centre. I felt like "the sludge (polite version) at the bottom of the manpower well", as one colleague put it. Teamwork was non-existent except between managers and, quite independently and accidentally, unsupervised workers. Management "supervision" killed off any teamwork. The "supervision" consisted of shouting at and bullying the workers. No help or encouragement was given.
There is little chance of promotion unless your face fits, in fact I have seen totally unsuitable candidates being whisked in as managers through Options, while better people are left on the workfloor because they were "unsuitable", or didn't have enough "drive". Most of the managers never saw you working in any case, as you were constantly on the go, trying to reach almost impossible targets.
As a former ex-Serviceman, I have NEVER been treated so badly. An ex-Services manger was almost punished because he dared to help his team. He was told to stay on his rostrum and SHOUT at his crew, not help them as our NCOs (and officers) did in the Services. Targets and percentages rule, no one is exempt, it seems, apart from management who continually shout, bully and harass the workforce - they people who do all the work!
They also seem to flout all the employment laws imaginable. Head Office have no idea what happens in these dark cathedrals of distribution when they are not around. Rumour has it they are too big to care and too big to fight. The Union has certainly given up the struggle.
Would I recommend Tesco as an employer? Guess what my answer would be. NO!
I worked at Tesco for about eight months after not being able to find a job post-university. I wasn't expecting special treatment-after all loads of overqualified people work for them now. However, the patronising and downright rude attitude of the managers wasn't exclusive to me-unless you were their best pal and sucked up to them, they hated you, regardless of attitude, education or experience. Our store manager only had a diploma to his name, and while I know qualifications aren't everything, it seems ridiculous that he was so under qualified and felt like he could push everyone around so much. The main job of the managers seemed to be walking around bullying people, tapping away on ipads or occasionally rumbling shelves, in groups of 2 at least giggling away and being rude to customers.
I'd say the worst part of working at Tesco was the "multiskilling" aspect. I worked on my own on a very busy department and nearly every shift I did I was expected to work 2+ hours on the checkouts. Sometimes the checkouts wouldn't even be that busy, I'd just be filling a gap or the dozy duty manager hadn't worked things out right. I even saw actualy checkout staff swanning around while I was doing their job a couple of times. One of my workmates managed to get away with going on checkouts by telling a duty manager she was "allergic" to the checkouts and actually got away with it haha...goes to show the managers aren't exactly super bright or "on it". Gave us a good laugh though. Anyway, I'd work on the checkouts for hours, then come back and have to restock empty shelves and placate angry customers. I was also told off for not talking to customers coming through my checkouts enough because I was stressing over what my department would be like when I returned I'd hardly have time for breaks and when I got back in the evenings I would cry uncontrollable and feel worthless and like I couldn't do my job.
This built up and up until I felt like I couldn't take the physical or emotional effort any more-there was absolutely no saying "no I have work to do" to these duty managers. My own manager said he couldn't do anything and pretended to care, then used what I had said to accuse me of not being committed enough to multiskilling. I ended up going to the doctors and getting some time off for stress, which I could barely afford. I thought this would be ok as my manager was almost constantly off having operations, on holiday or just generally "away"- I hadn't even been properly trained because of this which he actually admitted! When I got back I was interrogated (and that is the only way I can describe it) by a couple of managers where I had to reveal really intimate, personal details of my stress and why I needed the time off. She also told me my manager could have done something about not putting me on checkouts! :s Then I was told by my manager that I had "let the customers down" and essentially I wasn't good enough to work at Tesco....riiight. This was because he had failed to get anyone to cover my shifts during the time I was away, so it was totally unfair but it did really upset me.
What else...a complete lack of essential equipment that we needed to do our jobs was a big factor in making my should be easy job so difficult. I don't feel like going round the store for hours begging equipment off people while my aisle empties, but that is what I had to do. When I left, there was still no equipment and only two printer batteries to share between the entire shop floor staff, one of which ran out in about half an hour. Of course we got the blame if we didn't get the reductions etc done on time. Like I said, I constantly felt depressed and like I wasn't doing my job properly. On one occasion I signed a new permanent contract for what I was told would be part time hours by my manager (helping him out because he'd failed to hire someone to cover gaps in our rota) except I didn't notice this because I was forced to sign it ON THE CHECKOUT. Like, the personnel woman handed me this thing, I signed it and then went back to scanning stuff. This caused a lot of problems when I wanted my old hours back. Not to mention the holiday time I am still owed and the time when I came in on overtime and found all overtime was cancelled-my manager had decided not to ring me the night before. He then feigned all knowledge of this every time I reminded him I needed the time back-I'd given up all hope of being paid for it.
At the time I left, the situation was no better. I've been in contact with someone from the store and they said no-one's been hired to take my old job, as well as the other job still going...and my old manager has gone on holiday again. In this economy people are grateful for any job, but apparently this can wait because the poor, overstretched manager (on 25k +) needs some more relaxation time. And all this and the store manager gives us all a talk about how much Tesco's profits have gone up and what an excellent leader he is. I'm sorry I sound so bitter, but I had such a horrible time there when I could have just gone in, done my job and left with no problems. I could go on about how terrible it is, but I'd rather just forget and get stuck into my new job with no after-effects of Tesco. I'd advise not working for Tesco if you can possibly help it, and if you have to DO NOT get checkout trained under any circumstances. Stand up for yourself, suck up to the managers and don't get too distressed if you find it a completely negative and damaging experience.
12 week temporary contract on the deli counter. They knew and claimed to understand that I had a son just starting school. I was working till 10pm at night sometimes because I 'had to' being on a flexi contract. Had no uniform or safety shoes the whole time I was there.
I was bullied constantly by a 50 year old colleague, I told the manager and nothing was done about it. Went home in tears several times.
I had no training and was given all the answers for the fire safety question sheets we sometimes had to fill out.
There was never the correct stock or equipment, machines were always breaking and not being repaired quickly enough.
They were short staffed to the point where i could not have a break that i was legally entitled to. Then when we did eventually have new staff employed the people were too young to legally be allowed to handle or clean the meat machines.
I was promised I would be kept on for Christmas and had signed off benefits and adjusted all my housing / rent benefits correctly to suit my situation.
I was told in the middle of my shift that my contract was coming to an end and I was not flexible enough for them to renew it so I received a weeks notice. I had just been till trained the week before.
I luckily found a job that I'm now waiting to start but need references from tesco, I am still owed money from 2 weeks ago i have a 5 year old son to support.
I am 23 years old and have never worked so hard before, i put in 100% effort and had 1 day if sickness in 12 weeks. I am thoroughly disappointed in the way I've been treated.
Bad management, lack of training, hostile environment - just a few things how i would describe working at Tesco.
Before i get into to the review, some readers may find this review mostly based around negativity. Why is that? Quite simply, there isn't anything positive i can really think of. This review is based on my experience from working in one store, other stores may vary. This review is based on my experience as a shelf stacker.
My job at Tesco was working three nights a week shelf stacking. (Fri 10pm - 7am) (Sat 10pm - 7am) (Sun 10pm - 7am) I was there for just over 6 months, and in those 6 months i have seen health and safety not taken seriously by both staff and management, a fight on the shop floor between two workers, a worker storm out during their shift and to not be seen again and managers using bully tatics against their staff. The list is endless but life is too short.
Management: Management is pretty much the main reason for me leaving. Majority of the managers ( i use that term loosely) should not be in the position they are in. They don't know how to handle their staff when issues arise, they have absolutely zero people skills, they lack any type of leadership, to the point where their staff see's them as a joke and do not respect them at all. They clearly have not been trained on how to be a decent manager. It seems to me that if you work past your shift hours for free, give up your life and do alot of sucking up to the right people you will be a manager, regardless if you are actually suitable for the role. One thing is for sure, these 'managers' have never seen a health and saftey DVD in their life. I won't get started on Team Leaders because these people are so out of touch they actually think they are close in owning the store and becoming CEO of Tesco.
Training: What training...? The only 'training' i have done in 6 months is copying an answer sheet in the training room that took 5 minutes. Alot of the training comes from experience. Make mistakes and make sure you never do them again. These mistakes could have been avoided if training actually existed. But hey, Tesco have targets to meet and training new personal will take too much time, deal with it.
Work: This is the best bit about the job, if you're actually able to to get on without your manager constantly pestering you. Shelf stacking simply consists of filling up an aisle with backstock until your delivery arrives. Towards the end of your shift, you will be required to 'face up' and present the aisle so it is ready for trade. If you're a hard worker, your workload will just increase and very little praise will be given by your manager.
Conclusion: It is clear Tesco do not care for it's staff. They seem to forget that their staff are the cogs that keep the place ticking so i have no idea why staff get treated so badly. Even though shelf stacking is money for old rope, it is not worth the hassle that comes with it. Maybe you will be the lucky one and be employed by a store that is organised and with decent managers. Well I started working for Tesco not that long ago, but in that time I have had nothing but problems.
When I started there I was told that I would be fully trained (as I'd never had any retail experience before, it seemed pretty obvious to me), the first night I went in for my first shift, I wasn't told any of the "team leaders" names, I was just thrown on a till with another staff member who was as helpful as she could be, after an hour I was thrown on a till and expected to get on with it. I was terrified. I was left for over 2 months with no training at all, I didn't know how to get a hold of anyone or anything and customer after customer screaming into my face. I eventually had enough and went to the checkout manager who proceeded to tell me that it wasn't upto him to train me. Eventually got my bronze training then they just did my silver too so that I wouldn't complain anymore.
I have seen me sitting on my till waiting 25 minutes for team leaders to come along and give me either a void, bags or anything else. They seem to be too busy laughing and having a right good joke on their headsets to be interested in the staff. I work early till late on a Saturday and because my mum isnt well I took the day off (called in) and they kept on making sly digs saying I was lying. I have been in tears on multiple occassions due to the way that the "management" have spoken to me.
Absolutely had enough, never worked under any "management" like this before. they claim its not their jobs, they just look down at you as if you are something they scraped off the bottom of their shoe, the team leaders are left to their own devices, its an utter shambles. I had to apologise for their behaviour to customers one day, shouting and swearing over the headsets to one another. I think it is utterly disgusting. Every manager seems to take it as a joke. pffft Tesco "best place to work for" MY ASS.
I worked for tesco for almost 3 years, the problems there are endless, I was made to work 5.5 hours with no break, 6-7 hours on 15 minutes break. There is no such thing as benefit of doubt, if something goes wrong even if its nothing to do with you, the entire department takes the crap. you get nagged so much but when you get it 100% right you get no praise what so ever. The managers think they are never wrong, they stand around laughing on their phones all day, and talk to you about private matters in front of other members of staff. I tried to move departments but was messed around no end, I had a manager walk off through an interview, had an interview in another store but was only informed I had the interview and hour after I was ment to be there, and my manager put a stop to me moving at another time. I couldn't cope anymore I was in tears all the time, I was heading on the road to depression, no amount of money is worth that so I got myself a job in the evenings where I earn just enough to cover my bills and I quit. I might be living on a knife edge with money but I am so much happier, well At least I will be when tesco decide to pay me my final wage which I didn't get when I should have.
