Advantages: Very friendly, helpful staff, reasonable prices, good loyalty scheme.

Disadvantages: At the end of the day it is still a supermarket.

I've shopped at Tesco on and off for quite a few years now. I did try switching for a while to Asda, but found myself back with Tesco after a few months.

It's not specifically that the food is any better, or that the prices are any better - as a general rule, I'd say Waitrose for quality, Asda for price. BUT... for friendly staff in store, Tesco beats them hollow.

I'm disabled, so I need a bit more assistance when I shop than most people. I need to use a mobility scooter - my local Tesco has 4 of these, while the huge Tesco Xtra nearby has at least 6 (there may be more, but I know I've counted 6 there). I also need help packing the shopping into bags, and sometimes getting it out to the car if I've bought heavy items. Again, here Tesco wins through consistantly as there are always staff who are happy to help and who do it with a smile and a friendly word.

It's nice to be able to chat with the staff as your putting your shopping through the till rather than dealing with someone who's surly or who just ignores you and makes it clear you're just another part of the day they have to put up with.

I also really like that Tesco has a loyalty card, I know some people reckon that it's better to have cheaper prices and that this is how Asda view it, but personally I LIKE saving up the points for things, it's a nice way for me to be able to treat myself occasionally.

Is Tesco perfect - not by a long shot - like ALL supermarkets it suffers from being ...well, a supermarket! You can't help but lose something if the people who buy the products for the store, and the people who buy the products from the store never meet. But it has managed to keep a bit of the feel of being somewhere that tries a little to think of the customer at least.

Summary: Friendly, helpful staff, decent loyalty system and reasonable prices - not bad for a supermarket
