Advantages: great range of items,

Disadvantages: can get very busy, sometimes overwhelming in bigger stores

Tesco is currently the largest and most successful supermarket chain and retailer in the UK. It is only second to Wal Mart in the global stakes when basing its size and presence on profit. The Tesco stores contain a wide range of items and the range increases the larger the style of store you visit.

The name, Tesco came about after original founder Jack Cohen bought a shipment of tea from T.E. Stockwell. He decided to make new labels using the first three letters of the supplier's name (TES), and the first two letters of his surname (CO), forming the word TESCO. This was in 1924. Tesco currently has over 2300 stores in the Uk and has also expanded into international operations with stores in various countries around the world.

There are currently five main types of Tesco stores which vary in size from very large to more conveniece style local shops. The biggest are the Tesco Extra stores which are large, mainly out-of-town hypermarkets that have on sale virtually all of Tesco's product ranges. Tesco superstores are the standard large supermarkets which stock all the normal food items but a smaller range of non-food items compared to Extra stores. Tesco Metro stores are the next size down and they are mainly located in city centres, the inner city and on the high streets of small towns. Tesco Express stores are the fourth style which are localised convenience style shops, stocking mainly food aiming to try and mazimise their revenue in this smaller style store. The smallest type of stores are the one stop shops which do not actually carry the Tesco word in its name.

Tesco sells a wide range of items especially in the larger stores. We have a large store near us and it sells wide ranging items from computer software to ink cartridges, dvd and cds, clothing as well as all the usual food items you would expect with a great range of brands on offer. Tesco appeals to a wide range of people and has items for customers who are prepared to pay a little more and also those with a tighter budget which has helped it to be successful. The local stores such as the metro ones are useful and are great for picking up some items that you may need when you don't need to visit a bigger store. I have shopped more at Sainsbury's then Tesco but that is probably mainly due to hving Sainsburys closer. I do still visit Tesco though on occasions and it is a great store with a very wide range of products with quite reasonable prices. Some of the bigger stores can be a bit overwhelming in terms of size and Ido not tend to visit these that often but if you are in need of less specific and non food items they are useful. Overall a well known and recognised household name and currently the best supermarket around in terms of financial and global success.

Summary: biggest Uk supermarket chain

Good review. And to think that, when I was little, there were no supermarkets, let alone supermarket chains! How did we manage?!
