Advantages: good bread bun section in tesco

Disadvantages: ?

One morning before work I went to the Aylesbury tesco it is situated near my work. I had gone in to buy myself some coffee for work as I can not survive the day without my coffee at break time.As I went in past the fruit displays racing past the disinfectant my eyes were drawn to the mountains of hot cross buns , they were cunningly displayed with the notice two packets of 6 for £1.00 I could not resist. There was a choice of white or wholemeal buns I chose a mixture. I do not have many children in my department and they only eat a little I bought 4 pkts and there were plenty left over for staff,
I picked up my favorite jar of coffee and some orange juice for the kids (school paid for the juice) I then went to the till and paid not too long a wait well it was earlyabot 8 .10 I walked into work to discover not only had I treated the kids to hot cross buns someone else had bought some !!!

Tesco buns are either white or wholemeal I sampled both. The white ones were a little dry in comparison to the wholemeal ones and not quite as tasty. .
There was a reasonable portion of raisins in the buns I do like a fruity bun.
They were not very spicy now I do like a spicy bun although they were ok they were not the best buns I have had. The texture was reasonable a little bit firm for my liking not much air in them.
They did taste slightly spicy with a hint of orange. They were easy to cut open and butter.
When I got home I toasted some they were much better toasted with butter melting on them. I think these buns would be best served warm.
The children enjoyed them I though they were fair. They worked out as an inexpensive treat
I do prefer my own homemade ones but I need the time to make them.

These buns contain about 200 cals each. Tesco’s have masses of them and has had them available for ages. (Elder woman bit coming up) somehow I think it’s a shame that seasonal treats are available for months before h
and, it somehow makes them less special. I remember as a girl when hot cross buns were not available till a few days before Easter and the first we ate were Good Friday warm and spicy from the bakers. Its like Easter eggs the cream eggs seem available most of the year.

The name Easter is derived from Eostre the pagan goddess of spring. Eostor is the Norse word for the season of the growing sun.
Spring is celebrated and welcomed in by in many early cultures by making small cakes in honour of gods they were marked with the shape of ox horns or the shape of a moon also the pagan cross represents the 4 phrases of the moon. Early Christians banned these celebrations and buns then in the mid 7th century Easter hot cross buns were made the symbol being the cross to represent the cross that Jesus died on
Enjoy your buns best wishes happy Easter Mary

Thanks for a great review. I love Hot Cross Buns around Easter time but am always disappointed that they are sold at other times of the year!
