Advantages: Some real bargains to be had.
Disadvantages: Some items cheaper in 'normal' stores and questionable quality at times.
Everyone loves a bargain... I love one dont you?
I popped into my local 99p Store and just as I expected it was filled to bursting with delightful things... and all at the much coveted cost of a mere 99p... it really does do what it says on the tin!
The shelves are full with brand name goodies as well as makes I have never heard of. Stocking everything from toiletries to painting canvases (a real bargin), DIY supplies and tools to jarred chillies, to toys and christmas decorations. The range of stock is varied in terms of quality and content.
While there are bargins to genuinely be had... be warned all is not as it seems at times. I noticed that they were selling extra large party bag size packets of Walkers Sensations crisps, balsamic vinegar and caramelised onion (food of the gods no less). On a buy-one-get-one-free, in the 99p Store! Great deal if you are going to eat them soon, very soon as the best before date was just 4 days later. Fine as long as you are aware so check if you are planning to buy food stuff that you plan to store for any length of time.
Also be aware that you really do get what you pay for at times, I was looking at some attractive baking dishes but wouldnt trust them in the oven. Toys tend to very plasticy and not strong so I wouldnt give them to my children, not only may they not be all that safe but Im confident that they wouldnt last the distance. Might be cheap but a false economy.
If you check you may find that some of the toiletries are not the bargain you might assume them to be. Many of the shampoo's are under a pound at the local supermarkets. I did spot both pregnancy tests and condoms, come on.......... would you take the chance... not with yours I'd say!
And after the shopping there is entertainment to be had at the til. You may spot a sign at the til, it states that 'should your cashier fail to give you your reciept, you should report this to the store manager who will give you a £5 reward. Just one catch... you must keep your reciept (the one you weren't given in the first place) as proof of purchase, no reward can be given without it.
Enough said...........
Summary: You get what you pay for, be an intelligent shopper and you could benefit.

- 11/11/08 Hi and welcome.
Bargin is spelled bargain. with two a's. I am just telling you this because if you change the spelling it will make your review look a lot better. I hope you don't mind. Cheers, Gill |
