Aldi Grandessa Apricot Conserve
by xxfoxyredxx
I love toast and get through loaves of bread a week like you wouldn't believe! My Mother does the weekly shop and always looks for different toppings for me to try as I do get a bit bored from time to time with the same old stuff! She spotted this in Aldi and decided to give me a break from the usual strawberry jam offering she gets me. ... I was a little concerned to say the least...I've never had apricot 'jam' before!
The Packaging:
454g squarish glass see-through jar and it has a black screw on/off lid to the top of it. The front label is yellow and there a photograph of apricots on it and I'm told it is Deliciously Fruity, Grandessa Apricot Conserve and there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there. On the back of the jar other information includes ingredients being listed, storage instructions being given, along with the size being stated and contact details for Aldi are listed. Nice enough looking jar as usual from Aldi when it comes to their conserves and it's all informative enough of course.
The Apricot Conserve:
A bit stiffer than the consistency of a jelly it is a light orange transparent colour with no aroma to it really just a slight sweetness if you sniff at it hard lol. It spreads easily, though isn't soggy and it does have a few lumps of apricot pieces in it which are rather juicy.
Taste wise yes it tastes of apricots but for me this is simply to sweet. Sure it doesn't taste rammed full of artificial sweeteners or anything like that and it does have a natural sugary taste to it but for me there isn't enough fruit pieces in this and the 'sauce' is simply slightly too sweet and sour for me.
Not a bad apricot converse if you like this type of thing and great if you love very sweet conserves of course but this isn't 'me' at all lol.

Aldi Grandessa Fine Cut Orange Marmalade
by xxfoxyredxx
I love the Aldi Thick Cut 'Grandessa' Marmalade and when they didn't have it in stock my Mum had a dilema knowing I'd be gutted without my usual sticky delight so she felt she had no other option but to buy the fine cut version of the same thing for me. I wasn't too chuffed to be honest when I saw it wasn't thick cut ... marmalade!
The Packaging:
454g glass jar with a black screw on/on lid to the top of it. On the front there is an orange label and on that there is a picture of sliced oranges and I'm told it is deliciously Fruity Grandessa Orange Marmalade 'Fine Cut' and then I'm told it contains 35% fruit and there is an at a glance nutritional chart shown. On the back label other information includes ingreidents, storage instructions are given, there is a full nutritional chart on there, size is stated and contact details for Aldi are given. It's a nice enough informative jar and easy to open and informative enough etc.
The Marmalade:
Light orange and sort of transparent and jelly like with dark orange, small, thin shreds of orange peel. It has a zesty smell to it as well as tasting of oranges (and only of oranges). It is sweet with a slight undertone of bitterness from the rind. It's very sweet in a naturally sweet way and it's incredibly easy to spread due to it's rather sloppy consistency.
Verdict:
To me it tastes nice enough and it really is a fine cut marmalade. Nicely sweet but not overly so the only problem I feel that this has is that when you first buy, open and use it it is set rather firm but the more you use it the more it turns to slush in the jar and by the time you get half way down the jar it's pretty pourable in fact. Not for me this one purely on consistency however if you like light tasting, fresh marmalade's you don't need to use a lot of then this could be right up your street!

Aldi Crestwood Cornish Pasty
by xxfoxyredxx
I do love anything food wise that contains pastry and it's a real weakness of mine even though I know it's not great for my figure!
Cornish pasties I do enjoy whether they be warmed up or served cold and the other week my Mum got me one of these and I've had a few of them since! These only cost about 59p each (only in Aldi ... stores) and I actually really like them and think they offer real value for money!
The Packaging:
Clear and light and dark blue plastic oblong packet which is easy to tear into to open. On the front of the packet I'm told it is Crestwood Cornish Pasty 'Minced beef with selected vegetables in a puff pastry case' and I'm told it is delicious hot or cold, that it's ready to eat and freezable and there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there as well as the best before date being clearly stamped on. Other information on the back of the packet includes ingredients and allergy advice being listed (Contains: Gluten, soya, milk and egg), nutritional information in full is given, directions for heating it up (if desired of course) are also listed and finally contact details for Aldi are given. Nice enough packet which I can see the pasty through and it's all informative enough of course.
The Pasty:
Well as I stated earlier I have had this particular pasty more than a few times of late and I am a bit addicted to them and I have eaten them both hot and cold, cold as a simple snack and warm with chips and stuff like that and turned it into a quick meal!
So the pasty is a light golden brown colour and it is really heavy in weight and sort of oval in shape and the pastry is pinched together on the top sealing it. Within the pastry you have a mushy seasoned beef mixture of which you can see speckles of seasoning in it and then you can see thin slices of onion, carrot and swede which of course all all pre-cooked and therefore are very tender and taste as you think they should.
The pastry isn't all that flaky if your eating it cold, and if you want it flaky and warm you simply cook it on a baking tray for about 35-30 minutes. This is not suitable according to the instructions on the packet for microwaving and I agree with that totally cos I have done it and it goes soggy and stodgy and ever so floppy to handle so if you want it warm don't be lazy and use the oven or eat it cold lol.
So the pastry is ok, it isn't messy to handle and isn't brick like though I can't say it's amazingly buttery or anything but it is easy enough to digest of course. The filling is flavoursome and with no fat or gristle in there and it's moist and flavoursome and the flavours don't get lost because of the pastry.
I find this a substantial pasty size wise and I like the fact that there is plenty of tasty, good quality filling within it's case. Nice hot or cold so what are you waiting for then? lol.
