Morrisons The Best Red Onion Chutney
by rachelwestall Caramelised Red Onion Chutney Did you know that chutney originated in India and that the word comes from the Hindi word for "to crush", and literally means "to make chutney." This is related to the process by which chutney was traditionally made; often the ingredients were crushed together with a ... stone. This chutney is from the Morrisons 'The Best' Range. I don't think the ingredients for this product were crushed together by a stone! In fact I am sure they were simmered slowly together in a huge vat. We were given the jar as a gift so I am unsure of the exact price. I even tried searching on-line to find out how much it cost, but to no avail. Morrisons price listings are impossible to find. I'm sure a jar would cost around the £1.75 mark but I would be guessing. The jar is quite chunky and has square faces. The label is bottle green and is very understated. There ate no pictures or illustrations. I think it looks more like a 'basics' range product rather than a premium brand. The jar contains 300g of chutney. Ingredients Red onions (60%), muscovado sugar, white wine vinegar, sugar, balsamic vinegar, colour, preservative, salt, black pepper. Apparently the red onions are cooked very slowly to create the sweet and 'jammy' texture. Uses ... * In a cheese sandwich. * On the side with sausages. * Mixed into your mashed potato. * I have also used it to make onion gravy with. My Opinion..... The chutney is a dark brown colour. I must admit, I thought it would be more purple than brown because of the red onions. When you open the lid there is very much a smell of the vinegars that you get with pickles and chutneys. In appearance it is thick and full of onion pieces. It does have a jam like consistency. It has a delicious sweet taste (not sickly) but with a real tang. I love it with sausages - in fact I had some today, slapped inside a bread roll with a couple of chipolatas, for a quick lunch. I'm not a Branston fan and I think this makes a sophisticated alternative. I would buy this product again, or put it in a hamper type gift for friends. The jar is 100% recyclable Suitable for vegetarians. Thank you for reading. :o) Read the complete review |

Morrisons Salad Cream
by norton501 This is a review of Morrisons EXTRA LIGHT Salad Cream only. It is made by Morrisons and is stood right next to the "Morrisons Salad Cream" on the shelves in store. My Mum was constantly on a diet and as such drummed it into me to only every buy the lightest most low fat versions of sauces. Mr Norton loves full fat ... mayonnaise and salad cream but I shudder every time he buys it as I know how full of fat they both are and having suffered from various eating disorders when I was younger (am now recovered bar the odd bad day or week, but some things still freak me out like full fat mayo!) . I insist on buying Morrisons EXTRA LIGHT (not Light- this is hardcore EXTRA light!) Salad Cream. It just makes me less anxious when I eat if I know i'm not piling 20g of fat into me (you will understand if you have ever had any eating problems and then recover- some things stay with you). This is on sale next to the other Morrisons salad creams for around 30- 39p for a 285g glass bottle. It is very cheap as in my opinion, I don't think Morrisons rate it very highly so they think not many people will buy it- so it is cheap. That is just fine by me. It is also fantastic if you ARE on a diet or trying to lose weight. Whereas full fat salad cream can taste creamy and heavy this extra light version takes the creamyness away. So you get a quite acidic, vinegar like substance. I must admit it looks awful when you pour some of it out. It blobs out of the glass jar and it is a greyish light yellow colour. I eat this on a hard boiled egg I have sliced up and sprinkled a bit of Cayenne pepper on. As I find this goes PERFECTLY with egg. I managed to persuade Mr Norton to try some of this on a piece of sliced hard boiled egg despite him being Heinz or Hellmans all the way, he agreed this is quite special and its vinegar like non creamy non sweet taste sets this apart from the full fat versions. He actually liked this which was a bit of a surprise but validated my beliefs that this extra lgiht version is actually nicer than the full fat version and not just something you force yourself to eat as it is low fat. Per 15g serving you get a mere: 18 calories 0.9g fat 0.1g saturated fat Compare this to full fat salad cream at per 15g around: 52 calories 4g of fat 0.6g saturated fat The extra light version means you can eat a litlte more of what you want as you are not filling yourself up with an over-rich sauce. If you have the extra light salad cream, you can then have a bit more cheese on your salad or something! I would recommend this to people if you like salad cream on hardboiled sliced eggs or for on lettuce/ a traditional salad. You don't need a lot of it and although it does look unpleasant, it tastes much better and less creamy/ less sugary than full fat versions that I find can be heavy and overpower your egg/ salad. Even Mr Norton acknowledged this is very fine with egg and that is really saying something!! For 30-39p even if you don't like it then you are not losing too much money. If you find normal salad cream is too heavy or too creamy, go for this as an alternative. It loses two points as it looks awful when it comes out of the bottle. It can all blob out in a massive gloop if you are not careful (I am trying not to put you off here, but this is what it does!) and one point as a lot of you will actually like the creaminess of normal salad cream which this does not have. Morrisons Apple & Herb Stuffing
by xxSalzxx I have wanted to share my opinions on this stuffing for absolutely ages now so Im very happy that dooyoo have accepted another one of my product suggestions. Im not usually a big fan of the shops own brands but as I was walking through Morrisons the other day [I only popped in for some cigarettes!] I saw this Morrisons own brand stuffing ... on sale for £1 and the flavour really appealed to me. Since we were having pork for dinner that night I thought this would be a great thing to take home for my mom as she is always trying out new flavours in ordinary meals. I had really high hopes for this because I love stuffing (dirty minded people shh lol) but this unfortunatley did not meet those expectations at all! Anyway I took it home and since my mom had already started cooking the dinner so she said she would make some stuffing balls out of this and give everyone a few to try out. They were pretty simple to make you just add hot water to the stuffing mix and start rolling into balls or stuffing whatever meat you are eating with it and then leave it to cook for between half hour and 45 minutes then you should be left with tasty stuffing balls. Thats the theory anyway what happened in reality was very different. Once these were cooked I was horrifed to find that the stuffing hadnt stayed in neat little balls but they had sort of exploded into a big, flat line of bright green stuffing. It looked quite like bubble and squeek which for a start was very off putting but my mom served it up anyway because the appearance doesnt really matter as long as it tastes nice right?! Now my first thought was that this would be apple and herb flavoured rather than have massive chunks in the stuffing but that first thought turned out to be very wrong. When I looked at it I could see these little yellow lumps in the stuffing which turned out to be really hard chunks of apple which did not taste nice at all. I do not know exactly what herbs this was flavoured with but they tasted awful, way to strong and they stunk absoutely vile! The chunks of apple were just as bad, I think the aim was to make them tastes like ordinary apple sauce but they really failed. It didnt taste like the apples had cooked properly because they were still rock hard and bright yellow. I only had about 2 mouthfuls before I threw it in the bin. Now my family arent the pickiest of people when it comes to food but none of us liked this and we all agreed that this will not be on any future shopping lists! I got this on offer for £1 and to be honest because it was such a let down Im annoyed that I paid even that much for it, but if you still want to try it out I think it costs around £4 when its not on offer. This is just a big fail and I doubt I will ever try and stores own brand stuffing again, Ill just stick to the Paxo brand. The flavours were all really strong and did not mix well togther in the slightest they just tasted vile. I dont recommend that nayone tries this and Im only glad that my mom didnt stuff the prok with this because then it would have ruined our whole dinner! Stay away from this stuffing!
