At Christmas I seem to get quite a lot of chocolates given to me as presents, mainly from the elderly people I care for in my job, not that I mind of course I?m always most grateful for chocolate at all times and often I can tell what they are just by the size and shape of the parcel.

This time I was passed a small present measuring about 7 ½? x2 ¼ straight away my instincts told me I had a box of After Eight Mints, which I do tend to enjoy, although when I came to open it at first I was pleasantly surprised to find they were not mints but After eight orange thins, I have wanted to try these since I first saw them just a short while ago.

The package is identical to that of the mint verity with all the same markings and trade mark but one noticeable difference the box was mainly orange with dark green ends. Inside the individual thins are packed in the same way to, each chocolate sits in its own little envelope.

The chocolates there selves are very flat and about 2 inches square, the out side is a lovely crisp dark plain chocolate, while in side was a very thin layer of orange fondant cream. Each square contains approximately 28 calories just in case you?re on a diet.

Okay so I opened my box and couldn?t wait to try one so I slipped one out of the box and into my mouth, chewed and waited for the lovely orange tang I was expecting, unfortunately it was not so much a tang rather a nasty strong, over sweet, slightly orange flavour, instead of the zing and zest favour you often get with orange flavoured chocolates it seemed to remind me more of the flavour of the pith, strong and bitter.

I was very disappointed with the whole thing, I did expect much better from Nestle as most of their sweets and chocolates are extremely good but I?m afraid thi
s time they have really let their selves down. I offered them to my son and his girlfriend to try, they ate a few but agreed with me that they weren?t all that nice and most of them finished up in the bin as even the dog turned his nose up at them.

As I have said I was given these as a present but they are widely on sale in many sweet shops, supermarkets, garages etc. I have seen them on sale priced £2.39 for a 300gram box in Sainsburys but I have often seen After Eights in general on many buy one get free offers or some other kind of offer, although I won?t be tempted to buy these no matter what the offer.

After Eights are made by Nestle a company at the moment being boycotted by many people because of their ethic?s but originally were made by Rowntrees who were bought up by Nestle a few years ago. Nestlé are based in Switzerland and have a web site. Nestle.com.

All in all I cannot recommend these to anyone as I find them to be slightly over priced and they taste quite repugnant, as I?ve already said mine finished up in the bin and for me that?s almost unheard of when dealing with chocolate products. I do know someone who has told me they find them nice but even they had to admit to finding them a little bitter and quite sickly so I suppose its just a matter of taste.
