Advantages: Nice to eat
Disadvantages: Made by nestle
Ehh Christmas is a coming the shops are getting full of Christmas goodies. Now how many people will buy after eights for gifts or to serve at dinner parties? Maybe after a meal out you will get given a couple with your bill .Let me tell you about after eights I have eaten lots,
When after eight mints first became available in 1962 by the Rowntree Company they sold out to Nestle in 1988. due to my reservations about buying Nestle products I have not personally purchased these for a few years see http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/boycott.html for my reasons. However I have been given them by people who did not know and as I do like them and it would have been churlish to refuse them.
Anyhow Rowntrees produced these chocolates in 1962. Since 1970 they have been made in a factory in Castleford W Yorkshire. These mints are sold widely around the world.
I looked on the chocolate Christmas display in Tesco yesterday and yes they had some of these in their dark green boxes the box has a gold clock on it the time 5 past eight , hinting that these mints should be eaten after that time. The boxes have style and are quite classy
After eight mints are available in boxes of 300g and smaller boxes of 80g this contains 10 chocolates the 300g box is available in Tesco for£ 2.66p buy two for£4.50 saving 82p I can not finds a price for these mints except on Proxams review from 04 I think the price is around the same now . Boxes to put 5 after eights in are available from http://www.swiftbox.co.uk/After%20Eight.htm these would be good for favours at weddings these chocolates do work out fairly expensive per choccy best to buy a bigger pack
These chocolates are advertised as an after dinner mint. Often after having a meal out I have received 2 on the plate with the bill.
These mints as most of you will know are very thin only a couple of mm thick and 50mm square. each chocolate in the box has is put in its own paper sleeve I, infuriatingly people put the empty sleeve back in the box , I an remember teasing my parents with a box of empty after eight sleeves when I was about 10 yrs old.
These chocolates do smell very chocolaty .They have an outer coating of chocolate that covers a white peppermint creamy fondant centre. If you break the chocolate open you get that minty smell too.
The chocolate has a rippled effect on the top the under side is covered with the words after eight written endlessly over the underside surface. The chocolate is brittle breaks easily is smooth.
The taste of chocolate is overridden by the taste of peppermint from the filling.
The filling a thin layer of peppermint fondant is very, very sweet it tastes quite strongly of peppermint. The taste can be a little bit sickly if a lot of these chocolates are consumed.
These after eight mints are available in a plain dark chocolate or a milk chocolate an orange one and a white chocolate pack is now also available.
There are other products available now with the after eight taste, after eight straws are available in a tube and I think Mc Donald’s make an after eight Mc flurry.
Yes I do like these chocolates , but my principles will not let me buy them .
Summary: Thin mint chocolate fondant sweet covered by chocolate
