Advantages: Cheap and nice size
Disadvantages: Not buttery or flaky at all
When it comes to croissants I love them which is why I avoid buying them if I'm totally honest with you! However the other day my Mum did a little shopping in our local Aldi store and decided to treat me to these... I was pleased...my hips wasn't!
The Packaging:
The croissants come in a clear plastic tray and over that they are covered by a light blue and clear bag. In white writing on the front I'm told they are Continental Choice, French Style, 4 Butter Croissants 'Moreish light flaky butter croissants, delicious served warm', then I'm told they are freezable, ready to eat, suitable for Vegetarians and there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there. On the back of the packet other information includes ingredients and allergy advice being given, a full nutritional chart is listed, I'm told how to heat them (if desired) and contact details for Aldi are given. It's a nice easy to open packet and it's informative enough.
The Croissants:
Well these only are available in a pack of four to purchase and what you get is quite a large, round in shape bread. It appears flaky on the outside and is golden in colour and has a sweet bread smell to it. You can eat these cold or heat them in the oven for 3-4 minutes or for 9-10 minutes from frozen. Personally I eat mine cold in the main or I heat them on the bun warmer watching them like a hawk on my toaster.
However you eat them is much of a muchness though. I find these to be a little too thick which means they're not as flaky as I would like them to be. I'm used to them flaking everywhere and even when warmed through these don't really do that at all.
If stored in a bread bin (or somewhere cool and dry) they stay fresh for about 4-5 days and of course you can store these in the freezer if you want to!
Taste wise well they're not as buttery, again as I would like them to be however they are rather bread like with a hint of natural sweetness to them and a hint of a yeast taste. They taste nice enough, are a good portion size and are easy to digest just sadly for me they're just not as buttery and/or as flaky as I like. As I say though I do appreciate the size of them and I like the knotted appearance they have which makes them nice to prepare and give to someone else! Not bad but not my idea of heaven either!
