Advantages: Tastes great, Cheap

Disadvantages: None

I can't remember the first time I bought this product as it must have been so long ago and the fatc that there is a jar of it in the fridge all the time tells you that this stuff must be good.

For those of you who aren't to sure what feta cheese is it is a soft cheese from the Mediterranean and is traditionally made from goat or sheep milk. The cheese is usually served in cubes, which is the case with this product, and is white in colour.

You can buy Feta in various forms such as in brine, as block or like this product in oil which is my preffered option.

So that's a brief outline of what Feta cheese is so here I go with the review on Aldi Feta Cheese In Oil With Herbs.

Packaging

The cheese comes in a glass jar and you can see all the cubes of cheese in the oil and the pieces if pepper and herbs floating around in the oil. The jar is jam packed to the top so you have to be careful when you open it as the oil may go everywhere if your not careful. The jar has a traditional screw lid which is pretty easy to get off and to ensure the product isn't opened in the shop the label goes from the jar onto the lid so rips when the jar is open. On the front of the jar is picture of the cubes on a bed of lettuce leaves and has in bold letters 'Feta in oil with herbs'.

There is also a picture of a Greek god which gives the label a bit of class. The label on the back contains all the usual information such as nutritional contents, ingredients and storage instructions.

Each jar contains 375g total weight which includes 200g of drained cheese with the rest being made op of the oil and stuff.

Nutritional Information

The nutritional information is based on per 100g
Energy - 566 kcal
Protein - 10.5g
Carbohydrate - 0.4g
Of which sugars - 0.4g
Fat - 58g
Of which saturates - 10.1g
Fibre - < 0.1g
Sodium 0.5g
Salt equivalent - 1.3g

As you can tell the fat content of this product is pretty high so those of you on a diet might need to watch out.

Ingredients

I've been warned by a certain individual that I shouldn't put these in the review as its 'plagiarism' because it's taken from the packet but I'm including them anyway because they don't really take up much room in the review and are useful for people who have specific allergies or religious constraints.

Appearance and Taste

Even in the jar the product looks really great but when you open the jar and smell it its fantastic. It smells like a freshly made greek salad and the colours are fantastic with the white cheese and golden oil creating a good contrast and the herbs and peppers creating a nice dash of colour. The product tastes even better than it look and the cheese has a really gentle taste and is really soft and crumbly in your mouth. The oil tastes really great too and even when all the cheese has gone from the jar I tend to keep the oil as it makes a fantastic dressing for salads and can even be used as cooking oil and the herbs and stuff add a nice flavour to whatever you are cooking.

My favourite way of eating this product is to prepare a nice salad and then place plenty of cubes on top and then drizzle a spoonful of oil over the leaves as a salad dressing. Obviously its slightly greasy but the flavours more than make up for it.
Price

The product costs £1.19 for a jar and I think this represents great value although the product doesn't seem to last very long but I think that's because it tastes so good rather than there not being much. I don't know how much a similar product costs in other shops but I see it as a good price and would probably be happy to pay a little bit more. The same product is also available with olives in which I unfortunately picked up by mistake so just check the label before you put it in your basket.

Verdict

This is probably, in my opinion, one of the best product Aldi has available I have been buying it for a very long time and have had no problems with the product. It's a great addition to any salad and its also a great thing just to nibble on if you're a little bit hungry. The oil makes a great dressing so you don't need to worry about buying a separate one for your salads. All in all a great product at a great price.

58g / 100g is a lot of fat. The feta I buy only has 15g and it's not even called light which is about 11g.
