Advantages: Not a lot really .

Disadvantages: Too sweet, too expensive and too fattening .

I had to wait till a Sunday trip to IKEA to give this a try and let you know what my opinion on it was, because you just cannot find it anywhere else. I have to say that this Almondy Daim Cake is pretty much on a par with most things Swedish (not that good)!

Almondy who are the company that make this Daim cake are responsible for a few other cakes such as the Snickers tart but to be honest after trying this one I think I will be giving the rest a miss.

This cake is loosely based on the Daim bar once known as the Dime bar and it does have the sweetness of a Daim bar but that is about it.

The box this cake comes in looks a bit Marks and Spencerish to me, it has a picture of the cake as they would have you believe it looks and then little else but the name on the front, on the rear and sides of the box you get all the nutritional info and the ingredients.

If you can find these in your local supermarkets then you are doing well but if you do find one it will be in the freezer compartments as this cake comes frozen. Defrost time is fairly quick although I would avoid defrosting using a micro wave, that is never a good idea for cakes and this one is soggy enough without microwave defrosting.

The scent of this cake is very nice; it has a real sugary sweet smell with a distinct marzipan aroma surrounding it which comes from the almond biscuit and almond caramel rather than from marzipan itself.

The cake is made up from layers of almond biscuit, butter cream, crunchy almond caramel and milk chocolate which when combined do make a rather nice taste but only for about two bites then it becomes so sickly it cannot be eaten.

It tastes too much of almond, I do like almond but this is just way too overpowering and the fact it has the almond crunch caramel and the butter cream together is where the sweetness comes from.

The first bite tastes mainly of almond but you do get a chocolaty taste too, after that it is all almond and sugar really and I ate less than half a slice of this cake and began to feel nauseous.

The texture of the cake is not too nice either, the base is very soggy or let's say over moist to be fair and if it were not for the crunchy caramel this whole cake would be really nothing more than a pile of mush.

The soggyness of the cake was as big a put off as the taste itself then you have the calorie count to finally make you not want to eat any more.

100g of this cake contains 430 calories and more than 20g of fat, add to that the 47g of carbohydrate and you are looking at a very fattening cake and as it does not taste that nice anyway you would be better treating yourself to something else instead.

The cake cost just less than three pounds and it was truly a waste of three pounds in my opinion. My other half and both my kids had the same opinion on it as I did and even my brother in law who is famous for eating anything, found this far too sweet and did not finish his piece.

To sum this up I would say that it is like everything else available from IKEA..... Best avoided!!

Thanks for reading

I'm confused...didn't know Ikea sold cakes?? I've seen this in my local Morrisons, I don't really fancy it after your review though!

I'd prefer just a Dime Bar - now they are good! :o)
