I've always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with soya products. Well, more hate-hate really, for most of them, but a girl's got to get her calcium from someplace, and since these are dairy free, they aren't as bad for the asthma as a yoghurt. So I was surprised that alpro's soya desserts are actually quite nice. I've tried the vanilla, the chocolate and the caramel flavours and they are all tasty, but the vanilla is the nicest. This review is about the vanilla version. Be warned if you buy them that they also come in an organic version, and those aren't fortified with calcium. I have reviewed the vanilla custard because I love and use that product - and in many ways, this product is very similar; it's very moorish. Alpro Soya Dessert is a custard type pudding which is made from soya milk instead of dairy milk. As such, it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans and those who are lactose intolerant. Soya is associated with many health benefits - so it could be thought of as a dessert that is a little healthier than a standard milk custard. I'm not lactose intolerant, but I used to avoid dairy due to stomach issues and I actually prefer soy milk. It is also lower in fat than most dairy products, and as such being on a low-fat diet I have begun to eat Alpro desserts again as part of my lunch when I fancy something a bit tastier than a yoghurt. Vanilla is the latest of the three flavours I've tried so far of these desserts, the full flavour range is: chocolate, dark chocolate, forest fruits, caramel and vanilla.
