The cream of Devon.
I love Devon, I really love Ambrosia Devon low fat custard too.
Now, I am of the old school. I have ALWAYS made my own custard and didn't intend to stray from such a high ''home-makers'' stance
BUT, I am a live-in carer so when my client asks for his favourite Ambrosia Devon Custard, from a can, I was forced into a corner.
A dilemma, should I hold out for my principals or do what my client wanted.... wise woman, I chose to serve him his favourite and avoid any little paddies.... I joke!
Luckily for me I did open the attractive tin, heated it through, just a little, and the delicious smell was enough for me to throw my principals to the wind.
The tin says `delicous hot or cold' and that is true, we have it with fruit, especially tasty with stewed apples as the tartness is complemented by the sweet, creamy custard.
Devon Ambrosia custard has sugar and sweetener so those controlling sugar levels, they will need to take this onboard when measuring their daily sugar intake.
The label speaks of Devon so is rural in presentation, suitable for the product and of course the green and gold colours are an eye catcher on the supermarket shelf.
According to the information on the tin, milk has been delivered to the Devon dairy since 1917 so I suppose they've had time to get it right. I think they have, because this custard really is creamy, has a smooth texture and it is ever so tasty.
It apparently contains less than 1.5 percent fat and is suitable for vegetarians. On the tin you are reminded that milk is a healthy source of calcium, so important for healthy teeth and bones.
Instructions are clear on how to best serve the custard and there is even a lovely TASTY TIP on the tin which I will be trying in the next few days.
``For a surprisingly light dessert, mix Ambrosia custard with your favourite sliced fruits and spoon onto crisp meringue nests.'' I'll be popping a dob or two of cream on mine!
There is 425g of custard in the can, that's 4 servings for us but I guess that will vary from family to family.
Perhaps one improvement may be in the type of can..... it is one you have to use the can opener to open it - I'd like to see a more modern pull-tab tin. Small point.
I am loathed to admit it, but I do like the convenience of opening a can, just a little heating and the custard is ready to serve. The convenience of serving this custard, far outways my reluctance to give up my ''good housekeeping'' reputation of fresh is best!
Ambrosia Devon Custard is now a regular in our pantry and long may we enjoy this convenient, tasty way to eat custard.
I cannot answer the statement on the tin....``Devon knows how they make it so creamy''
I just know they do.
