Advantages: Great tasting, very versatile

Disadvantages: High sugar content

I recently wrote a review on Angel Delight which I keep in my 'Just in Case' shelf in my kitchen cupboard. Another item, I always have on this shelf, is a couple of cans of Ambrosia Devon Custard. This has been a great favourite with my family for many years.

Ambrosia custard is made by Premier Foods. They are the UK's largest food producer. Premier Foods are responsible for the production of Hartley's jams and marmalades, Batchelors soups, Mr. Kipling cakes and Hovis bread to name just a few.

This custard has been manufactured since 1917 and it is probably the most well known brand, of ready to serve custard, you can buy today.

The one I buy comes in a 425g can which is covered with a green and blue label. There is a picture of the countryside at the top of the label, and underneath this picture, are the words, Ambrosia Devon Custard.

When you open the can you are met with a lovely yellow coloured custard. It looks really nice and thick and as soon as I open the can I have to get a spoon to have a taste. It is very difficult for me not to do this.

The custard can be eaten hot or cold and has a lovely creamy texture. When I put the spoonful of the custard into my mouth I love the rich, thick texture in my mouth. There is a very slight vanilla flavour to it.

I have tried other brands of custard including the supermarkets' own brands but I think there is nothing to beat the taste of Ambrosia. With other brands I get the feeling that there is maybe a little something missing in the taste. They seem to taste a bit on the bland side.

As I have said this custard can be eaten hot or cold. It tastes great on it's own, straight from the can. It also tastes very warming when it has been heated up.

You can eat this custard on it's own or you can put some fruit or cream on top. It also tastes great when poured over apple pie or any cake for that matter. It can be used in trifles and can also be used when baking Danish pastries.

A standard can costs around 79p from any of the supermarkets. I find that it will serve two people if eaten on it's own and four people if poured over cake.

Ambrosia Custard can be bought in cans, cartons and small individual pots. The individual pots are excellent for packed lunch boxes. It can be bought in both standard and low fat varieties.

The custard is Gluten free and is suitable for vegetarians.

A standard can of custard will give you (per half can)

143 Calories
16.8g of sugar
2.2g of Fat

There are no artificial colours or preservatives in this custard. It claims to be a low fat food (which it is) but it has quite a high sugar content.

Once the can has been opened you must remove the custard right away, and if you have any leftover, it must be kept in the fridge and used within three days.

I would highly recommend this custard to anyone looking for the nearest taste to home made custard.

Summary: This is one product I don't mind paying a bit extra for....
