Advantages: Recyclable can, delicious custard, easy to use, great with puddings.

Disadvantages: None

Sometimes my cooking skills are a little lacking and custard is one of these areas so I usually just cheat and Ambrosia Devon Custard in a can is the one that I purchase for 77p per 425g can I think it's worth buying as it keeps the man in my life happy when I've slogged away with a homemade pudding and he doesn't want to eat it alone (wise man!).

The custard comes in an aluminium can and has a paper label around it which displays the Ambrosia logo and the label also shows the heating instructions, ingredients & nutritional information. This contains milk, is free from artificial colours & flavourings and is suitable for vegetarians.

It can be heated on the hob or in the microwave and I usually just open the can, pour it in to a saucepan and then heat for a couple of minutes stirring throughout. The only way you could really go wrong with making this custard is by having the heat too high or forgetting to stir it and this can give you a thick skin on the custard that's unpleasant and can really spoil the whole creamy indulgence of the custard.

The custard itself is made with skimmed milk, buttermilk & sugar and the total milk content is 73% it's very creamy and does have a delicious thick taste to it. It goes very well hot with most desserts such as apple pie, rhubarb crumble & I love the sugary milky texture of it. It has a delicious scent which begins to rise as soon as I've started heating it up and it makes my mouth water.

This is very easy to make, tastes great, has a recyclable can and is available at a very cheap price. A 425g can usually serves three adults in our house and there is 143 calories and 4.1g of fat per 140g serving so providing this is enjoyed in moderation I see no reason why you can't enjoy this delicious treat.

I am rating this custard 5/5 as it tastes better than any custard I've ever made before and it's really convenient as it keeps for many months in the cupboard and therefore I always have a can on standby when I need it.

Summary: A delicious custard that's easy to heat up and tastes great.

The carton's better - it's easier to whack in the microwave! :)
