Advantages: Handy standby that doesn't need a fridge, Quick and tasty treat over bananas!
Disadvantages: Can't think of any
While shopping at the weekend I thought it was about time I started getting my son's food box ready for University, as he is off in a couple of weeks ( sob sob!). Well I thought I'd start with some comfort food today, not knowing who he is sharing with yet I thought just get somethings that he can keep in his room without a fridge.
I spotted the Ambrosia Devon Custard, the one I'm talking about is in different packaging to the one shown on Dooyoo above. This is the four pack version that comes in little pots like yoghurts with a cardboard sleeve.
On the front of the sleeve there is a lovely clear blue sky with a green field, in the centre of that there is a picture of Devon fields with cows scattered
across the fields with a farmhouse and children flying a kite. Just looking at the front of these pots makes you feel relaxed ( probaly because I used to live in Devon many years ago!).
On removing the sleeve you will find 4 plastic pots which you must split apart. Each pot is 135g and has 138 calories, which I think is quite good if you fancy something really nice especially if it's over fruit like bananas ect..
Now I know my son will just peel back the foil top and eat straight from the pot, but these little pots can be put straight into the microwave ( once the foil lid has been removed!) and heated on full power for 45 seconds ( this is for a 650 watt microwave ). Once taken out just give it a stir and pour!!!
This is a lovely creamy custard without being to sweet, it is a rich yellowy colour and tastes as good as any other custard, maybe not as thick as it would be if you make it yourself but great for a cupboard standby or if you can't be bothered to make your own. What I particulary like about these is that you don't need to keep them in a fridge and they have a long life on them as well, the ones I got have a best before date of 03/10.
These are also very good for childrens lunch boxes or the hubbys, as these
pots each contain 142mg of calcium which is 17% Recommended Daily Allowance. So these are good for healthy teeth and bones. For a change you
can buy these in :
~~~ Banana ~~~
~~~ Strawberry ~~~
~~~ Chocolate ~~~
~~~ Toffee ~~~
~~~ Vanilla ~~~
This custard comes in a variety of different packaging, you can buy it in:
~~~ 1kg Carton ~~~
~~~ 500g Carton ~~~
~~~ 150g individual pot ~~~
~~~ 135g pack of 4 pots ~~~
~~~ 425g can ~~~
This custard is made in Lifton in Devon and has been around since 1917, it contains no artificial colours, no preservatives or flavours. Also it is gluten free and is suitable for vegeterians. Also Heston Blumenthal went to the Ambrosia Creamery in Devon in 2008 and made his own version of rice pudding Tudor style for his 2009 TV programme.
So I would definitely recommend these to have in the cupboard as a treat for all the family. You can buy a low fat version, but I think it is only in the larger tins and cartons. The prices are around 70p for 500g carton, 75p for 425g can or £1.39 for 135g 4 pack. So not to expensive either!!!
Summary: Nice hot or cold. You can put in fridge to get really chilled delicious !!!
