Advantages: Great taste enjoyed by all the family, easy and quick to prepare - no lumps !

Disadvantages: More expensive and unhealthy than Bird's Instant, possible wastage

The battle of the custards!

Ambrosia Devon custard is smooth and creamy, with a pleasant vanilla taste, but can be a little over sweetened. It is very easy and quick to prepare in the microwave taking only 2 1/2 minutes, and you can heat it on the hob if you prefer.

In the past, we have always used Bird's instant custard - the one you make with boiling water rather than the one you add to hot milk on the hob. I find this custard is just as nice, if not nicer than the new Ambrosia custard that we have started buying. This view is not shared by the rest of my family, and my preference for the instant stuff is probably because it is was I had when i was a kid.

One advantage of the birds instant custard over the tinned ambrosia is that you can make as little or as much as you like. You aren't left the decision to scrimp and just use one standard tin (425g) or to have leftovers by using up two tins. You can also store a much larger amount of custard in the same cupboard space as powder rather than tins. However, there is always the risk of creating a huge lumpy mess if you don't stir the powder fast enough!

At 143 calories and 4.1g fat per portion of Ambrosia custard is a relatively healthy dessert. However, one portion is equivalent to 1/3 or a can, so be warned that a whole can will add up to around 450 calories and 12.3g fat. A single portion of Bird's instant comes to 109 calories and 2.9g of fat, so this is the healthier option , especially if you are alone.

Conclusion

So, when I making custard for the whole family, I will happily use tins of Ambrosia Devon custard, which we particularly enjoy with a pear and cinnamon crumble. However, when I am making custard for myself alone, I will go back to my old favourite of Bird's Instant Custard.

Summary: My family love Ambrosia and it has plenty of advantages, but my favourtie is still Bird's Instant
