Advantages: Cheap, Easy to Make, Suitable for Coeliacs
Disadvantages: Lots of Sugar
Well you may find this to be a strange subject to write a review about, but I have recently rediscoved this product and thought I'd bring it to your attention. This is probably something we all remember having when we were children, Angel Delight for pudding yum yum, but not thought of having since. Well I'm here to tell you that its just as enjoyable to eat as an adult.
Your probably not aware of this but not being able to eat wheat/gluten makes the whole pudding thing is very difficult (well in fact most meals are difficult). So I'm always on the look out for something new to eat. When I got my new Gluten Free Food directory in January I was very pleased to see that I could eat Birds Angel delight. I hadn't had any for years, but remebered liking it, so I went out and bought some. It was delicous and so easy to make as well.
The Packaging
The colour of the packaging varies according to what flavour you buy, Brown for chocolate, Red for Strawberry and Yellow for Banana and so on. Its comes in a 67g sachet with a picture of a childs face on the from which has been doodled over with the Angel Delight. The packaging seems to have been designed specifically to apeal to children. It is supposed to make 4 servings, but for adults its more like 2 servings.
Instructions
There are very clear instructions on the back of the package, and they are as follows.
Pour half a pint of milk into a basin
Add Angel Delight and wisk until light and creamy
Spoon into Desert dishes
Leave to thicken for 5 minutes (no need to chill)
Its really easy to make I prefer to leave mine to thicken in the fridge as its nicer chilled. A very quick and easy Dessert in less than 10 minutes. There are also other servicing suggestions on the back of the pack, e.g. a milk shake with the Angel Delight Mix.
The result is a lovely thick mousse. What colour mousse I hear you ask, well that of course depends on the flavour you choose. My favourite (chocolate) is a lovely thick chocolatey Brown and Strawberry is a lovely pink colour.
Nutritional Information
The nutritional information is per serving and is based on 4 servings per pack (although I rather share it into 2 servings, if your doing this just double the values below).
Whole Milk Semi-Skimmed Milk
Energy 125 kcal 112kcal
Protein 3.2g 3.2g
Carbohydrate 15.0g 15.5g

Fat 5.8g 4.2g
(of which saturates)4.7g 3.6g
Fibre 0.1g 0.1g
Sodium 0.2g 0.2g
Its not the healthiest dessert ever as it contains quite a lot of sugar, but on the other hand it is made with milk and as with all milk based deserts will contain Calcium. The packaging also states that it does not contain Artificial colours or preservatives, definately a plus.
Flavours
It is avaliable in lots for different flavours these are
Chocolate
Banana
Strawberry
Butterscotch
Rasberry
My favourite is the chocolate its delicous, a lovely milk Chocolate flavour. My hubby's favourite is the Banana (although I find this to have a slight chemically after taste), its tastes exactly like those Banana shaped foam sweats that you get in pick and mixes. The strawberry is also very nice and also seems to be the sweetest. I haven't actually tried the butterscotch or the rasberry yet, but will let you know once I do.
Price
It is currently priced at 45p per sachet at Sainsbury's, I'm sure you'll agree this is very cheap for a desert.
Conclusion
This is a very cheap and easy to make Dessert. It's not the healthiest dessert in the world but its not the most unhealthy either. Its great to have in the back of the cupboard in case your a bit peckish, or if you need something quick to make for the kids. Both adults and kids will enjoy this. Go on try some, you'll enjoy it.
Well I'm going to go and eat some now.

- 06/08/07 either todays versions lacke setting power, or, I must have done something wrong with mine as after standing, it came out still soft enough to run/pour. Used electric whisk and measured the milk and left it just below half pint.
disapointed and wont be buying again in a hurry. 79p from spar is a bit OTT as well. Never mind, cant get it right all the time |
