Advantages: It is just about the tastiest dessert you can make for under 40p using limited cooking skills
Disadvantages: Its processed
Angel Delight was originally released in 1967 as a quick tasty dessert for the family to enjoy, by the mid 70's it was a popular staple of every home, with Angel Delight being a fantastic alternative to Ice Cream and Arctic Roll as the dessert of choice in any foody household!
Angel Delight is a flavoured packet of powder which when added to milk and allowed to set in the fridge transforms into a fantastic moreish dessert.
The main flavours are vanilla, butterscotch, strawberry, banana and chocolate, prices vary from 34p to 42p and are available in any good supermarket, there are also generally store own brand versions of the dessert for slightly cheaper prices.
The packaging are 67g coloured packets, each colour representing the flavour, so brown for chocolate and red for strawberry, there is a different picture of a kid with angel delight all over their face on each packet.
To make the dessert follow instructions on the back of the packet, add the required milk, whisk the powder in a bowl with the milk until totally smooth and then refrigerate until set.
It usually takes about 20 minutes to set but is well worth it. You get a lovely mousse like consistency and the flavour of which ever packet you use, it is a tasty treat and always a favourite with kids, its lovely with whipped cream or hundreds and thousands but can be added to most desserts.
I often add chocolate before it sets to have a very snazzy Michelin star quality dessert which would probably be worthy of Heston Blumenthal, it is creamy, tasty and the lumps of chocolate add a wicked twist, obviously if your feeling really daring you could add such delights as malteasers, smarties or even dare I say it jelly babies if you're that kind of experimental chef. Whatever you do, your likely to have a fantastic dessert, although be warned get the milk to powder ratio right or you'll fail your first true test as a chef!!
There is a bit of sugar in the dessert (210 calories in a sachet for people who aren't in touch with their devilishly daring sides) although not enough for me to be worrying you here, anyway if you want a sugar free dessert eat an apple, this wickedly decadent dessert should be bad for you, it just tastes like it should, go on indulge the kid in you and reach for the Angel Delight!
Summary: Heaven is a place on earth with Angels delight in a snazzy packet
