Advantages: Quick to make, simple, versatile, sugar free varieties.
Disadvantages: Heavy dessert, if you eat too much you will feel sick. Chemicals!
Oohhh, Angel Delight, just as tasty now as it was when I was a child. I have recently rediscovered Angel Delight after seeing it in the supermarket and fancying a trip down memory lane so I selected my favourite flavour, banana, and merrily skipped off home (after paying for it of course) to see if it lived up to my expectations.
So, what the devil is it? Angel Delight is a milky pudding which sets a bit like a blancmangey moussey kind of thing, it really isn't like any other pudding! It comes in powdered form in a sachet which, when mixed with milk and whisked until light and creamy, will set to create a lovely (if a bit heavy) dessert.
One sachet is supposed to serve 4 but my partner and I polish off half each. If I were serving it for children it would serve 4! The pudding is very easy to make, simply pour half a pint of semi-skimmed or full fat milk into a measuring jug or mixing bowl, add the powder from the sachet, whisk with a whisk or beat with a fork until it's light and creamy then pour into bowls or glasses and leave for 5 minutes to set. I always make it in a measuring jug as it's easier to pour into bowls. I also always put it in the fridge to set; it does say on the packet that there is no need, but I do anyway. Sometimes, as I have been mixing it, it has started to thicken and set in the jug causing pouring difficulties so don't overmix!
Angel Delight comes in a sugar free variety which is just as nice as the regular kind, I can't tell a difference in taste. The only thing is that the sugar free variety doesn't seem to come in as wide a range of flavours.
Flavours are as follows:
Banana (my fave!)
Chocolate
Strawberry
Raspberry
Butterscotch (not a fan of this one!)
I have only seen Strawberry, Raspberry and Chocolate in the sugar free varieties. Doesn't mean the others don't exist though!!
Nutritional Value
As with all puddings, Angel Delight isn't particularly good for you but if using semi-skimmed milk as opposed to full fat and use the sugar free variety you could cut down the calorie intake.
For the Strawberry regular Angel Delight, nutritional info is as follows per 92g serving with semi skimmed milk:
Energy 107kcal
Protein 3.0g
Carbohydrate 13.9g
of which sugars 11.6g
Fat 4.4g
of which saturates 3.4g
Fibre Trace
Sodium 0.20g
salt equivalent 0.49g
Bear in mind, this is with the milk included.
The ingredients:
sugar, vegetable oil, modified starch, emulsifiers, propane 1, 2 diol esters of fatty acids, sunflower lethicin, gelling agents: Tetrasodium diphosphate, Disodium phosphate, Milk, lactose, milk proteins, flavourings, colours: Beetrood Red, Annatto, Mixed Carotenes, whey powder from milk, and Silicon Dioxide as an Anti-Caking agent.
Mmmm, sounds good, er, not quite! Although this is an extremely yummy dessert it is full of chemicals and things which sound like you could clean your bathroom with rather than serve up to your children and their friends after tea.
So, chemicals aside, what can you do with it?
I like to put chopped fruit in the bottom of the bowl and pour the mix over it, then put 100s and 1000s on the top to make it look pretty! Or you could layer different flavours, allowing one layer to set at a time before adding the next in a glass to create a more grown-up dessert, this is particularly nice when you layer the banana and chocolate flavours with some slices of banana on the top and some chopped nuts to finish it off! The possibilities are endless!
One negative (except all those chemicals!) is that it is a very heavy dessert, either that or I eat way too much of it. It is very filling so take care on the old portion sizes. Four stars rather than five from me because of its heaviness. I am pleased to report that it did fulfill my expectations and it takes exactly the same as I remember, thank goodness!!
A truly delightful dessert, have got some chilling in the fridge right now! Yeah!
Summary: A great dessert for young and old alike.
