Not up to Mr Kipling's standards (Asda Cake slices - Almond)

Advantages: Cheaper than Mr Kipling's

We all have to save a few pennies these days and my favourite Mr Kipling cakes are not particularly cheap. While shopping in Asda I noticed they had their own brand of Almond Slices, at only 94p for a box of 6. The price compared well with Mr Kipling's, which are always well over £1, so I thought I would give them a try.

The picture of the Asda almond slices on the front of the box looked nice. You can probably see it in the photo Dooyoo provide. But I have to say that when I opened the pack the real thing looked less impressive. The sponge section of the slices looked quite dense in texture, more like a bath sponge than a sponge cake, and a bit pale. Overall they did not look as nice as the Mr Kipling's. They were also disappointing in taste and not as almondy as I expected. I could taste the almonds when I first started eating the cake slices, but it quickly disappeared and was overpowered by the jam layer. The slices are fairly small, only about 3 bites big. While Mr Kipling's may not be much bigger the fact that theirs are a much better flavour makes up for it. The Asda ones were Ok, but my conclusion is that if you want almond slices you are better off paying the extra for Mr Kipling's which are far more enjoyable than the Asda own brand.

Each cake has 160 calories. They are quite high in sugar (9.7g per cake), and fat (8.8g per cake). That is a lot of sugar and fat for a not very enjoyable cake. The box states the cake slices do not contain any artificial colours or flavours, no hydrogenated fats, and are suitable for vegetarians. They DO contain gluten, wheat, nuts, egg and soya if you are allergic to any of those things.

Personally I wouldn't buy these particular Asda cake slices again.

Summary: Ok, but for the extra money you will probably enjoy Mr Kipling's better than these!
