Advantages: cheap at 40p a packet and very easy to make. Taste nice warm

Disadvantages: They dry out quickly and taste a bit powdery

For Christmas, I bought my daughter a cheap cooking set and topped it up with simple packet cakes and bits. She has finally got round to studying it and wanted me to help her make the packet of chocolate sponge. The chocolate sponge mix came from ASDA and was under 40p for the packet.

The packaging is light and dark purple costing under 40p I was not expecting it to be much good. The sponge mix was ASDA brand, which is a value range offering good value for money. All you needed to add to the mix is water and one egg.

We emptied the sachet of mixture into a mixing bowl it looked very powdery and dark. We then added the egg and 3 tbsp of water and my daughter whisked and whisked and whisked. The instructions recommended using an electric whisk for 2 minutes but that would be too easy and it wouldn't have tired out my daughter so I allowed her to hand whisk for about 10 minutes then I whisked for a minute with the electric whisk and added some more water. The mixture looked and smelt lovely so we transferred it into a round sandwich tin there was enough to make a decent sponge but not enough to make two sponges to make the cake. Therefore, we changed to paper cups and made 12 decent chocolate sponge cakes.

I popped them into the oven for 15 minutes on 200 C. The cakes smelt lovely while they were cooking and were very quick and easy to make. The only things we needed to use were a bowl, whisk, spoon, tray and cup cakes. The cakes came out the oven perfectly formed and had risen nicely to make decent cupcakes. The cupcakes cooled for a few minutes before we began the important sampling! Yum they were very nice. They tasted sweet and chocolaty but they did taste slightly powdery but not enough to ruin them. I could however tell they were from a packet rather then completely homemade because of the powdery taste and texture.

It is worth noting that these go very dry quickly a couple of days after we made them they were very dry and did not taste very good. However, on the day and the day after you make them they are lovely.

Overall what can you buy with 40p anyway? Not much. 12 decent sized chocolate cupcakes for 40p sounds great to me and it was so quick and easy to make. My daughter really enjoyed making these without having to wait for me to measure ingredients. Once we pop some cream or icing on top they will taste fantastic!

Summary: Great for kids to make quick and easy but could last better
