Advantages: Delicious taste
Disadvantages: NONE
After having done the weekly shop at Asda last week the crisps we bought were all Asda branded ones, as due to the fact that we eat quite a lot of bags - we all have a packed lunch each day - buying Walkers crisps all the time can be rather expensive. As well as this none of us are really too bothered about such crisps and so the 'cheaper brands' as it were, are fine by us. The flavour in question that I ate today was a bag of Asda's Cheese & Onion crisps.
The crisps come in a plan green bag that has a couple of gold swirly bits on it. Being green however my brother automatically associated this with salt and vinegar crisps as Walker's cheese & onion come in a blue bag although they do seem to be the only company that do this (or so I think anyway). The bag itself contains 25g of crisps, which it tells me on the back as well as all the other nutritional information. The front of the bag also tells me that the crisps are suitable for vegetarians and contain no artificial colours or flavours and no hydrogenated fats.
When I opened the bag I was hit with a very nice cheesy smell. By this I obviously mean a cheese smell that made me want to eat the crisps not the cheese sort of smell that wafts out of your brothers bedroom when he forgets to put his socks in the washing basket. As you can gather therefore I was very pleased with the crisps so far. When I looked in the bag I was even more pleased as the bag was reasonably full and all of the crisps were whole and uncrushed. Furthermore they all looked nice and golden and I didn't spot any funny black bits that sometime appear on cheaper crisp brands.
So would they taste as good as they looked and smelt? In short yes they would. They tasted in my opinion rather like a bag of Walkers cheese and onion crisps only not as strong, which for me was no problem. Better still the flavour wasn't weak at all and was unlike in the bag of Asda's Prawn Cocktail flavoured crisps evenly distributed.
Texture wise the crisps were also very nice. They were crunchy yet softened up nicely when chewed and although I left my packet opened on the side for about 3 hours (I got distracted doing something else) the crisps stayed firm and hadn't softened up when I return to them - an added bonus for sure.
So what are they like health wise I hear you say? Well again they're not too a bad, well not in my eyes anyway. Each bag contains the following...
Calories - 130
Protein - 1.4g
Carbohydrates - 13.4g
Of which sugars - 0.8g
Fat - 7.9g
Of which saturates - 1.0g
Fibre - 0.9g
Looking at the nutritional values in Walkers cheese and onion crisps for comparison I have noted that a walkers bag also contains 130 calories and that it actually contains more fat 8.0g (ok so not that much more.) For me therefore I would rather by these crisps.
In conclusion therefore I would rather by these crisps rather than Walkers. They taste near enough the same in my opinion and are nutritionally just as good or bad for you whichever way you want to look at it. Better still they cost a little less too, as a 6 pack of Walkers cheese and onion would cost you £1.18 whilst a 6 pack of these crisps will only cost you 94p. Ok so again the saving isn't great but it's 24p and all the pennies count. You can also purchase 3 packs of 6 bags of Asda's crisps for £2. These means you're getting 18 bags of crisps for £2 when the equivalent in Walkers would cost you £3.54, which is a saving of £1.54, much better. So go on give them a try.
Summary: A delicious tasting crisp
