Asda Fruit & Fibre
Advantages: delicious, textures, taste, sized boxes, price is ok, healthy
I love cereals and have recently again been trying various different ones. One of the cereals I've sampled is Asda fruit and fibre.
This can be found in only in Asda as it is specific to them however the equivalent can be found in other supermarkets such as Tesco. There are also similar cereals in branded names but you must be prepared to pay a lot more for them.
They can be found in the cereal aisle alongside the other fibre based cereals. These particular ones were right next to the All Bran.
They come in two different sized boxes. One of them weighs 500g and the other is larger at 750g..This is quite a average for your typical cereal box as most usually weigh 500g! The price for the smaller box is £1.25 and the larger one will have you paying £1.49 in Asda! In my opinion this is a really decent price considering sometimes for a 500g you will be paying nearer £2 or more! Especially if it is a branded one! Often there are offers on with the cereal but at the moment there are none on!
The box is actually quite attractive and does its job well. It is predominantly a lovely purple in colour. There is a some different shades of purple around the box too. Purple Is not a colour I would assosciate with cereal but it does its job very well like I said. The box looks quite pretty but not overly luxurious! The back of the packet gives all nutritional and ingredients information. This is set out well and is easy to read. There is often a competition on the back too or a promotion and information on how to contact Asda if you have any problems with it. On the front there is all of the usual information containing product description and the brand name and product name. There is also a delicious looking picture of the products inside. The lovely image is of pieces of bran flake, raisin and banana flying around the place. The box is quite plain but like I say it does its job! The front of the box states that this cereal is also suitable for vegetarians!
Inside the box, the cereal comes in a see through plastic bag which is the same as some cereal bags. Nothing too special there! The bag is easy to open and the shredded wheat bite size can be tipped out very easily. Often at the bottom of the packet there are lots of crumbs but this for me is fab! There is a delicious sweet like smell to them which I wasn't expecting at all from a non branded product. The smell I could detect most was banana! However the smell was definitely very branny too! bran flakes are my favourite cereal so I was pleased with this. The bag doesn't seem to be filled very full which makes the price seem a little less great. I'd reckon it was just under three quarters of the way filled.
Pouring them in to the bowl, the milk pours over easily. It doesn't really soak in and it doesn't mash up too easily. This is not too good for me as I prefer mushed up cereal when it comes in this form. I always end up pouring even more milk over before mashing them down. Spooning some into my mouth the first thing I get is the taste. The main thing I could taste at first was the milk, which was a bit annoying. However after my second spoonful I was on to tasting the real cereal. The bran flakes were delicious and turned from nice and crunchy to deliciously soft. The nuts were few and far between but the ones I did have had a lovely texture. The banana chips were actually quite hard and provided a bit to much crunch for my mush loving pallet. The raisins were so large and really juicy and I just loved them. All together the taste was incredibly enjoyable and I ended up having this cereal for about 2 months in a row! I popped one of the banana chips in my mouth straight from the packet and it was extremely crunchy! It is much better when its been softened off even slightly in the milk! The milk at the bottom of the bowl when I had finished had turned slight golden colour and sweet in taste and I loved drinking it all with a straw. It actually tasted really like banana! Overall the taste of this cereal was alright and for the price you cant really lose.
A recommended portion size is 30g with 125 ml of semi skimmed milk which will give you 169calories and 4g of fat. This is not too bad however I think I had about 200ml of milk and 40g cereal which bumps the calorie content etc up quite a bit! It's worth keeping this cereal for a treat!
