Advantages: scrumptious, cheap, healthy
Disadvantages: only available at asda
With so much variety out there, cereal bars provide a deliciously healthy snack to fill that little hole (or for the naughties who don't sit down to a proper breakfast, to grab on the go!). I've always loved the nutri-grain cereal bars, but they can be quite pricey. However, when I came across Asda's own mixed fruit flavour, going by the name of 'fruit & grain', I thought they'd definitely be worth a try.
Inside the deep red cardboard packaging, you will find eight individually wrapped cereal bars, in a red wrapper. When you open it, there isn't much of a scent to emerge, unlike the nutri-grain, which generally release an instant fruity hit. When I took the bar out of the pack and turned it over, I noticed little grains on top of the oaty bar, which was a good size, around 10cm in length.
Taking a bite straight into the cereal bar, the deliciously oaty taste provided instant pleasure. Its texture was quite rough but incredibly soft at the same time. The filling was incredibly smooth and full of taste, a syrupy sweet puree which tasted strongly of strawberries, and what I thought was blueberries. It turned out that the three fruits present were in fact strawberries, blueberries and the not-so-obvious raspberries. It was a delicious combination which went superbly with the magnificent texture.
Verdict
---------
Sometimes supermarket's own variety of well-known products can taste cheap and nasty, but fortunately this cereal bar was just as fantastic as the nutri-grain bars, if not nicer. Better still, nutri-grain bars are priced at about £2 for a pack of 8, so these are much cheaper too!
This fruity sweet cereal bar is perfect to fill that little hole when you find yourself feeling peckish mid-morning or afternoon, and is indeed much healthier than a bar of chocolate, or dare I say it, that scrumptious-looking pack of biscuits!
Not only do these give you a boost of energy rather than leaving you feeling sluggish, but they are also handy too. When children are hungry, they don't like to wait for something to eat, and these are ready to be eaten straight away, compared to preparing a sandwich for example. They are practical, and can be popped nicely into school lunch boxes or into your bag. I wouldn't advice slipping them into your back pocket however, they squish easily!
Kellogg's Nutri-grain version are healthy too, though it turns out they have 140 calories per bar, whereas these cheaper versions have just 125 calories. They both have 13g of sugars, but Fruit & Grain has less fat by .4g, with just 2.6g per bar! That's quite delightful to hear!
These cereal bars are incredibly delicious, and definitely worth a try. They are quite addictive too. There are a few other flavours in this range too which I think I'll be sampling soon enough, especially the Apple and Cinammon option - it sounds amazing.
Healther and cheaper than the more popular brand, it's a wonder why these cereal bars haven't conquered the snack aisles yet!
