Advantages: Look ok, not too bad for kids, cheap
Disadvantages: Don't taste good
I was recently given a bag of Asda Mini Jelly Babies by a friend, as part of a 'get well soon package', which was very kind. Unfortunately, despite the fact that I normally love Bassetts jelly babies, I was not at all impressed with these.
Jelly babies are fruit flavoured jelly sweets in the shape of little people (or babies!), and these particular mini ones from Asda are aimed at children and are part of their 'Kids' Sweets' range.
They come in an orange plastic packet with cute bubbly lettering and a little clear window so that you can get a glimpse of the babies before purchasing them. The bag contains 100 grams of jelly babies and so is quite small, though not really small enough for a child to eat in one go.
Inside you will find red, yellow, orange and black jelly sweets. They have a little bit of white powder (starch) on them, but not as much as the classic Bassetts ones. They look cute enough, though I am not sure that they are a lot smaller than normal sized jelly babies: I certainly wouldn't call them mini.
The taste test comes next, and the results aren't good. All the flavours seem to merge into each other and are a bit tasteless and synthetic. The texture is quite stodgy and sticky, and the lovely distinctive taste and feel of the Bassetts jelly babies is nowhere to be found. These taste cheap.
On the plus side, they are only 37 pence, and are currently included in Asda's offer of three packs of Kids' Sweets for £1. Also, they have no artificial colours or flavours, which is good if you're giving them to kids. However, each sweet has 15 calories and 3.1 grams of sugar. In 100 grams, there are 339 calories and a huge 69.9 grams of sugar.
It's important therefore to eat these in moderation, but given my dislike of the taste and texture, I personally will not be eating them at all!
Summary: I'll be sticking to Bassetts from now on!
