Advantages: good price

Disadvantages: messy as not supervised

At 57p per 100 grams, the Pik N Mix in my local Asda is certainly competitively priced. Our local market is 49p, but the one in the mall is £1.20, so for a mainstream shop, 57p is pretty good.

The Pik N Mix offers around 30 different sweets, all in separate plastic containers. You fill your own bag, weigh it, and then pay at the check-out. Fairly often, the scales aren't working, so you have to go on guesswork, which is a bit of a let-down really.

Selction wise, there's a good mix of Asda's own, with regular classics, and then some weird bits and bobs. Expect to find milk bottles, white chocolate mix, foam sweets, fudge, flying saucers and the like.

I have to say, Morrissons have one up on Asda as they have a delicious chocolate caramel rice crispie bite thing, but apart from that there's no major difference.

Of course, the display gets in a bit of a mess, mainly from kids whose parents allow them to climb all over it. It's very unhygienic, as there's no-one manning it to make sure you don't put your fingers in and out, and then there are those who, finding they've got too much, shove a random handful back in the wrong place.

Bags full of sweets adorn the bottom of the unit, probably from people who decided not to take their choice, and I can't help wondering how long some of the sweets have been in there.

Around 10% of the time, there will be low stock, and I won't be able to get a good bag full, which is annoying.

All in all, I would recommend you try and find a well priced sweet stall, where someone is overlooking the whole thing and keeping it in better order, but if you can't match the price, Asda's Pik N Mix is certainly worth a trip.

Summary: up to you

My local Asda doesn't have one of these, although it's massive - now I feel deprived!!
