Advantages: Easy to taste each one as no one is watching

Disadvantages: Sloppy and messy

When I was a young girl, my mum would always go into the City Centre on a friday to pay some bills. Every week without fail she would return with a bag of Pic N Mix and a pomegranite. Me and my brother would sit infron tof the TV and eat until everything was finished and then be sent to bed. I was made to believe that Pic N Mix was the most expensive thing in the world which was why my bag had around ten sweets in the bottom. If I ever got the chance to fill a bag for myself then my mum would be stood by watching me and move in before I had put five sweets inside my bag! These days I make up for the fact that I couldn't have as much as I wanted and fill the bag to my hearts content without a thought for how much it will be at the end.

I usually buy my Pic N Mix from a very sweet guy in our local market as his prices seem to beat everywhere else but this week I went to Asda with my mum and decided to pay a little extra for my delights.

The Pic N Mix is in the confectionary aisle which you might have guessed but it is tucked away down the very end. There are around 35 different sweets that are all in different plastic containers placed alongside and below each other; almost like a gridlock of sweets. Each container has a little lid that you can lift to retrieve your sweets of choice and floating around are little coloured shovels which you are encouraged to use rather than your hands. The sweets cost 57p per 100g and there are so many to choose from that my eyes always pop out of my head and I start salivating as soon as I see it!

My experience of these sweets have been different on the few occasions that I have used them. One time I found that there was hardly anything of anything in the plastic containers so I gave it a miss and another time more of the sweets were on the floor than in the pots. Thankfully this time there was a substantial amount of sweets for me to choose from although the whole area was a bit sloppy and untidy. There were sweets in bags that someone had obviously started to fill but then decided to buy something else instead. Random sweets were dropped on the floor and in the gaps where the bags were placed. Some sweets were in different containers where people had taken them out but put them back in the wrong tub. To be honest it is a bit of a shambles and maybe they would be better off having them on an end near the checkout so that the whole system could be watched a bit more closely.

The sweets that I ended up buying weren't the freshest that I'd tasted which made me question how long they had been stood on the shelf. I suppose I should share a little of what sorts of sweets I actually picked up; anything from cola bottles to laces, marshmallows to jelly beans and jelly lips to foamy teeth.

Over all I haven't been too impressed with the system at Asda and hate the fact that the scales never work so you don't really know how much you are going to spend. I much prefer the old guy in our market who keeps a close eye on all of his customers and you can tell that his produce is fresh.

Summary: Not the best pic n mix Ive seen.
