Almost as good as home made! (Asda's Strawberry Trifle)

At the weekend I just fancied something sweet - yes, I know I am a diabetic but my blood sugar is finally under good control and I had been working hard all day selling lifeboat souvenirs on the prom here in Llandudno! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Anyway Dave popped out to Asda and came back with one of their strawberry trifles for us to share.

The Cost

The trifle was a 600g one and cost just £1.74 and I doubt that I could have made one for that price, especially when you factor in the amount of time it would have taken me. Having said that it is very unusual for me to have shop bought trifles - on the rare occasions that I need a trifle I would make my own from scratch.

The Packaging

The packaging of many of the items in Asda has been reduced and this trifle is no exception coming with the very minimum of packaging. In fact you can see from the older picture at the top of this review that the cardboard used to cover the whole dish but not so now.

The trifle is made in a clear plastic dish with a clear plastic peel off film over the top which has two main advantages - it can all be recycled and it is easy for the customer to see the product before making the decision to purchase. The dish now has just a fairly narrow band of cardboard round it (again easy to recycle) giving the information about the product.

On the front of the cardboard we are told that this is an Asda Strawberry Trifle with juicy strawberries in strawberry jelly, layers of soft sponge, creamy custard and whipped cream. We are also told that this product contains no artificial flavours, colours or hydrogenated fat. It also tells us that this product is suitable for vegetarians.

On the back of the cardboard sleeve there is the full list of contents of each of the various trifle layers, allergy information, nutritional information, how to store the trifle and the recycling information. Incidentally it does say that the film cover is not currently recycleable but I always put them in with my plastics!

There is also a reminder of the Asda promise that if we are not happy with any Asda product they will replace it AND refund our money, you can't say fairer than that can you?

Storage

This product must be stored in the refrigerator and cannot be frozen. It should be eaten within two days of purchase and within 24 hours of opening. Mind you, trust me, once you have tasted it, it is not going to last very long!

The Look

To be fair the trifle looked lovely and very appetising. The various layers were clearly visible through the plastic dish and the cream was attractively swirled over the top of the trifle. When the trifle was spooned into dishes the layers remained distinct - I thought this was worth mentioning as some cheaper trifles do tend to collapse into a mushy mess when served!

The Taste

I have to say it was gorgeous! The mixture of the custard, strawberries, jelly, sponge and cream was perfect. The custard was indeed very creamy, the sponge was nice and moist, the strawberries in jelly added a fruity tang and the cream finished the whole thing off with real indulgence. It was a sweet treat but I didn't find it sickly in any way and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Obviously it isn't something I would eat on a regular basis but I would certainly buy another one of these.

The Nutritional Information

Bearing in mind that the trifle is 600g and Dave and I ate it between us easily without feeling that we had eaten too much I will give the nutritional information per 100g.

In Conclusion

As I have already said this definitely has to be an occasional treat as far as I am concerned but a treat it most certainly is! I found it to be an excellent trifle and for £1.74 I would definitely recommend it.
