Advantages: None, except as a drain cleaner.
Disadvantages: Horrible rusty colour, not peeled properly, inedible.
Pickled beetroot is one of my favourites. I can eat it with just about any meal and also like it in sandwiches.
You know what I mean by sliced pickled beetroot, don't you? Small deep red beetroots cooked, peeled, sliced and covered in vinegar with a few added spices. I believe the beetroots are cooked whole to prevent the colour leaching out and making them pale in colour.
The trouble here is that Asda don't know how to do this. I bought a jar of Asda Sliced Pickled Beetroot which comes in crinkle cut, or plain slices. Mine was plain sliced. Asda got that right, but that's the only thing their product had in its favour.
First of all, the vinegar was a rusty orange colour and I tasted it as it looked a bit odd. Paint stripper was my first thought. Then I examined the beetroot slices which weren't all slices, some were chips and thin off cut kind of shapes. They were the same rusty colour as the vinegar. It reminded me of the rusty water we sometimes get out of the tap after a drought.
As if this was not enough to put me off altogether, I then discovered that many of pieces of beetroot had black skin on them, and black dots like the eyes you find on potatoes.
Yuk! I drained the vinegar into sink and hopefully the acid will clean the pipes and threw the rest into the dustbin. This product was completely inedible, it actually turned my stomach. Talk about poor quality.
Summary: Horrible, a complete waste of money. Couldn't get any poorer quality.
