Advantages: Excellent value.

Disadvantages: None I can think off.

I have to admit to getting quite annoyed, when I hear the likes of Jamie Oliver, and Hugh Fearnley-whittingsname getting all uppety about chicken welfare, and how economy chicken is packed with water. An how we should all be striving to eat Organic and/or Free Range Chickens, and should feel guilty for eating cheap chicken.

Which is fine, if you can afford to pay the premium. An no doubt celebrity chefs can afford the finest produce.

However, back in the real world if you are a family on a budget, Chicken welfare with every respect, is going to be (or at least should be) pretty low down on your list of priorites. An I am not being mercenary, but Human welfare and happiness is far more important.

This is where the Economy chicken comes into its own. Saving money! These economy Asda Smart Price Chicken Breast Fillets are perfect for keeping to a budget, and you get a semi-decent prodcut to boot.

The cost is just over a pound, and is less than a quarter of the price of the equivalent "Free Range" product.

I mean so what that 10% or so may be water. It is clearly labelled as such. The water which is injected into the product, is to help maintain the chicken in condition while it is frozen, or transported, and if you read carefully there is a net weight given too. So there is no "big trick" its just to help with preserving the item while frozen, or as a chilled package. An to give them a plump look. Appearance is important, and just because we are on a budget why should they be left to look naff.

Smoked haddock gets painted yellow to look pretty, chicken gets plumped with water. So what.

The same happens across the board, for many products. Bacon comes to mind. For those who say it tastes watery, or becomes dry quickly, or is unhealthy I strongly disagree.

Taste for example, strongly depends what you are going to be doing with it. If you are making a chicken curry, chicken fajitas, a chicken stir-fry and are going to be introducing strong flavours, premium chicken is indistinguishable from these Asda SmartPrice fillets!!

The ones I cooked tasted great. Maintained a good texture, and were succulent. Which ticks all the boxes for what im looking for in a breast fillet.

I also slept soundly knowing I had saved a few pennies, rather than knowing a chicken has 1.2 sqaured metres to run around in, before slaughter, rather than 0.25 square metres. I say to those who argue against, If Chicken welfare bothers you, DO NOT eat chicken at all. Leave them be, and let them run around in a lovingly prepared farmyards clucking away merrily.

So to my mind, these Asda Smart Price Chicken Fillets are a bargain for people who want to eat affordable chicken. Why be inconvnienced by eating chicken less often, when you can enjoy chicken at an affordable price.
Well done Asda! People on a budget Thank you!!

Summary: Cheap Chicken is a wonderful thing!!!!!!!!

I agree :) These are excellent especially when on a budget. I normally add these to a curry or a pasta and they taste great x

But why should we feel guilty for buying a food product?

Regar dless of how pampered they are, chickens are a food item. Welfare is important, but so is cost.

What about fish. They do not have the benefit of being slaughtered they are just drowned in the air by the thousands. Lobsters are cooked alive!
Paralyzed Prawns! Screaming Squids! Crying Cods!
